Warning: If you’re having a bad day, this movie will definitely make it worse !!
Directed by: Hriday Shetty Main Cast: Rich & Flamboyant Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia’s Hair (!) Supporting Cast: Soha Ali Khan, Samir Dattani, Farida Jalal, Vikas always sulking Bhalla and a host of relat ively unknown but fairly irritating family members, 2 dogs that keep bringing the lovers together (man’s best friends prove themselves worthy of the title once again)
A couple of decades after ‘Bobby’, Rishi uncle and Dimple aunty are ready to elope once again. The twist in their love story being that they are now single parents to a bunch of disobliging kids, and how they elope on the advise of Farida Jalal- the older and self proclaimed wiser sister-in-law of Dimple Kapadia.
The obstacles affecting their union are:
Dimple’s daughter: Soha Ali Khan (who used to be a fine upcoming actress), is to be married to childhood sweetheart Samir Dattani, whose mother dislikes Dimple’s family and is sorely against the marriage of her son to Soha Ali Khan. When she finds out through her scheming ‘Saas-Bahu-extra’ friend that Dimple had dinner with a strange man (Rishi), and that they danced cheek-to-cheek in a position totally befitting a 45+ couple that has met only 2-3 times, at this Moroccan restaurant, she finds it the perfect reason to break the engagement between her son and Soha Ali Khan.
Vikas forever-sulking Bhalla who has just taken over his father’s (Rishi uncle) business, is enraged to see that his father has turned into a ‘dirty old man’, and claims that it’s the worst example possible when his soon- to-be-born son, (with his totally flat stomached wife) would have a philandering grand father!
A bunch of siblings of Soha Ali Khan, who’re always annoyed, moody and bawling, and ready to fight Rishi Kapoor’s son and wife for what they consider their bad influence.
The truly ‘supporting’ caste is Farida Jalal and Samir Dattani who instigate Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia to vanish from the scene of turmoil, when uncle and aunty barely know each other, to a resort owned by guest star Satish Shah and his awkwardly fashionable wife. Ofcourse uncle & aunty stay in separate rooms. (Don’t you know, they haven’t seen Saalam Namaste as yet??) Note: when aunty and uncle make the getaway, Farida Jalal and Samir Dattani don’t know where they’re going.
Then ofcourse, the kids have their misunderstandings and tiffs, and then one fateful day Vikas now furious Bhalla’s male servant finds a suspicious box of things containing Rishi Kapoor’s belongings in his own bedroom (Sherlock Holmes, where else would one find RK’s belongings-in his own room for Godsakes!), and promptly hands them over to Vikas Bhalla’s wife- now referred to as ‘wife’ hereon.
The wife finds an old photograph and a letter with a date at the back, and she being the smartest one among all in this generation, figures out that Vikas Bhalla’s real birth father is Rishi Kapoor’s older bro, who passed away and left a young wife and baby boy (Vikas Bhalla) behind. So in his true sympathetic style, Rishi Kapoor marries his bro’s wife to give this spoilt brat a father and family. Ofcourse his wife passes away, and now Vikas understands how self less Rishi uncle was that he never told him the truth and looked after all his needs, but never bothered about his personal likings and even sacrificed love to marry his mother!
2 buckets and some awful awful moments of Vikas Bhalla sobbing later, he and his wife troop into Dimple Kapadia’s house to apologise and discuss what should be the next POA. Through some clever (?) detecting of the phone number by Samir Dattani, when Dimple Kapadia secretly calls her wise sis-in-law, he finds where they are put up, and all of them plan to drive to the resort to show their encouragement and approval to uncle and aunty.
In the meanwhile, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia have been having quite the fun and frolic at the resort. With Dimple aunty in her just discovered designer boots and mod western outfits a far cry from her salwar kameez clad days in the city….basically they continue to sing and dance- even to a remix of ‘Khullam khulla pyar karenge’, and only now realize that they do love each other and will even fight with their families opposing for their love.
So basically the kids enter the resort and find aunty and uncle chatting, and then Rishi Kapoor gives a solid passionate dialogue on his views and his plans to marry Dimple Kapadia to the kids, who finally go and hug their respective parent’s in approval and accordance on their union, while Farida Jalal has an ‘I-told-you-so’ grin on her face.
On the whole, Rishi Kapoor with his many extra pounds steals whatever show their is completely with his effervescent personality, being a rich and well retired polished man, with good taste and penchant for swanky cars and dogs.
Dimple Kapadia’s hair takes center stage and veils any acting plans that she had with hardly any range of expressions. She has her tresses coloured a honey blonde shade that might have been hip at the time of the making of the movie, but with a different generation. It has an uncanny resemblance to Ken, Barbie’s ex-boyfriend’s plastic mop, for it’s lack of movement- a far cry from her luscious locks as seen in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. She might be a wonderful actress but was not at all convincing as the anxious mother, infact most of the time she looked like she’d rather be elsewhere instead of with these immature kids!
Farida Jalal who always comes across as the sweet, protective and loving mother figure continues her role from her many serials with the portrayal of the same naughty sister in law. Soha Ali Khan is wasted for this role, since she has done some very good work elsewhere (Antarmahal) and anyway refuses to be believable as the indignant daughter.
On the whole, this movie is definitely avoidable with all it’s irrelevant songs, spats over dogs and baggage, and a caste that didn’t seemed too convinced of their final decision even after approving of their parents falling for each other. The movie wraps up all too abruptly, again as if the Director got tired injecting incidences into the stretched and pulled story and decided that he had better things to do with his time.
All the best if you still have plans to watch this movie, and please leave a comment!
