A Romantic Comedy...

Despite engaging scenes and comedies, sometimes movies doesn’t fair well in the box office. A recent example for this is ’’Hum Dum’’ which was released without fanfare and didn’t get approval from the ticket window because of lack of publicity. ’’Pyar Kiya tho Darna Kya (PKTDK)’’ might also have fell in the same genre and I don’t remember this movie making any good business though people claim this movie to be a super hit (Please correct me if Iam wrong). I watched this movie and enjoyed it. It was a very simple plot but was entertaining. Since I couldn’t find any proper review in MS, I thought of jotting down my review on this movie.

The Story

It is the story of a protective brother Vishal Thakur (Arbaaz Khan) who

wants his sister Muskaan (Kajol) to be happily settled. But the only problem is that Vishal doesn’t like any of the grooms selected for Muskaan and ends up bashing them. The only guardian of Vishal and Muskaan is their uncle (Dharmendra). Vishal is known for his temper and nobody in the village even

dares to play pranks with Muskaan for fear of getting bashed. Muskaan’s childhood neighbour Ujala (Anjala Zaveri) has a soft corner for Vishal. On a Rakshabandhan day, Muskaan somehow convinces Vishal and lands up in a college in Mumbai. Vishal doesn’t like the scenario there but still leaves her there and returns to the village. Suraj (Salman) also studies in the same college and after some hilarious moments, the two become best of friends. It is at this point Vishal comes to meet Muskaan and Suraj mistakes him for her boyfriend and smashes him which makes things topsy-turvy. Vishal after bashing Suraj, returns to the village along with Muskaan. Suraj follows them to the village with the hope of winning his love back. Whether Suraj wins the heart of Vishal and marries Muskaan forms the climax.

There are some unwanted elements like showing Suraj’s mom as a wicked Stepmother and also the fight over the land looks completely out of place. Well for the movie to run for more than two and a half hours, these ingredients are a must I think. The scenes in the college involving Suraj and Muskaan are good. The second half gets a bit dragging but comes on track with the ’’Ode Li Chunariya’’ hit number. The climax is predictable as usual.

Performances

Salman Khan is good in the initial reels but in the second half he starts irritating Arbaaz (and also the viewers). But it is justified because his lovers brother beats the pulp out of him initially. Kajol is ravishing and performs excellently. She is a natural when it comes to acting and nobody can take her vacant place. Hope she comes with a bang in the forthcoming Kunal Kohli’s project with Aamir. Arbaaz Khan is surprisingly good as the protective brother. He doesn’t know to emote as there are hardly any scene for him to cry or be sad. But he does leave a great impact. Dharmendra doesn’t have a full-fledged role but he is good at what he does. Anjala Zaveri’s role is more like a cameo and she has one song to her credit. The others in the cast have done their work well.

Music by Jatin-Lalit is good. O Jaane Jaana and Ode Li are hummable tunes and the others are also good. Cinematography is good, and shot well both in the first half (college) and the second half (Village). Direction by Sohail Khan is good but he could have still made it shine better. Neverthless, a good direction!

Verdict

PKTDK is a feel-good entertainer and is worth watching.

I would give 7 out of 10 for this romantic comedy.
