THE ART OF SATIRICAL STORY TELLING

"Raat Gayi Baat Gayi",   is probably one the most well made movies under the banner of "PNC" and "RAJAT KAPOOR". The production house and the actor cum director cum producer are truly regarded as the third league of film makers in bollywood and this fact is made more evident by the nicest of their efforts as RGBG ( though commercially the movie was a disaster).

These are a few lot who don’t care about hits or flops. One can experience the enjoyment and dedication in their work. Whether the actors in this league like Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and Rajat himself or the film makers like Shaurabh Shukla, Anjan Dutt and even Rajat.

RGBG has the not so wonderful script like "Bheja Fry" but the writers Rajat and Shaurabh made it a point to serve the ordinary food with some extraordinary flavors and obviously the nicest of desserts like "Nipples of Venus" ( you ought to watch the movie to get the pun here).

Shaurabh Shukla holds a special place in my heart for all the perseverance he has made in order to get to the position he is in and the bottom line is that he has achieved all this and even more at his own costs and demands. RGBG will always be known as one of his best directorial ventures taking into account his previous failed tries like CHEHRA and MUDDA. The modernized treatment that he has given to the movie is seriously commendable.

The story revolves around a hangover which results into a lot of confusions and finally making the lose ends of every relationship in the movie getting entangled without any knots. The bunch of friends; Rahul (Rajat), Amit (Vinay), Mitali (Iravati Harshe), Saxena (Dalip Tahil), Nandini (Anuradha Menon) and Jolly (Navneet Nishan) meet at a party organized to celebrate the release of a new book by Saxena. The party is a page 3 one with people singing, dancing and Of! Course lost in the drinks. Sophia (Neha Dhupia) is one of the chief attractions of the party for Rahul and Amit. They both are seen trying to flirt with her at some point amidst the party. The whole scenario takes a not so expected turn for the characters and the next day seemed like one hefty burden instilled in them.

The pace of the story is a little drag sometimes but then the humorous dialogues and the unique acting styles keep you engaged. As is said before, the script is not very brilliant but the sincere effort by every individual involved with the movie makes it enjoyable and nice.

Rajat Kapoor is brilliant in his part and so is Vinay Pathak. Neha Dhupia looks stunning and it seems she has also learned the art of casual acting by getting associated to this clan of actors. Other actors do justice to their role. Ranvir Shorey is funny in his short guest appearance, you ought to hear the jokes he cracked.

The music was basically acoustical and music director Ankur Tewari’s work suits the plot.

Finally RGBG is a well made, mature stuff and definitely watchable. It has got the capacity to make you laugh and even make you feel happy and sometimes romantic too. So if you are in search of or lack of any of those emotions, go for it. It can act like a medicine.
