For the romantic

It’s a special place for me, Raigad fort..was the first place I kissed a girl!! But more about that later.

Domineering over the Sahyadris, rich in its history as the capital of the great Shivaji, Raigad is without question the most daunting and mystical fort amongst Shivaji’s legacies.

There are 2 ways to reach the top; each equally exciting.

  1. The paved walkway offers outstanding views, phenomenal architecture and superb buttermilk for the avid trekker. If you are accompanied by a chattering guide, it also offers some interesting stories from the days of yore. Note especially, the door which opens onto a stone wall, built to kill elephants who were used to ram open doors to forts!

  2. The ropeway : Gee whiz, this is the flimsiest, scariest, most astonishing ropeway I have ever seen (and I have seen several across the world!). A little more than a cardboard box with a rusted latch for a lock and no windows, one needs to crouch to avoid one’s head hitting the ceiling. This, when seated! And the damn thing sways when it blows, I kid you not. A definite must, either while going up, or down!

Once you reach the top, you are met by desolation and ruins. what you need is a good guide, and plans for an overnight stay. Because without any doubt at all, the real charm of Raigad unfolds at night.

There are just 2 places to stay at Raidad: The ZP quarters, where you need either influence or some cash and a corrupt mind to stay. Or (highly reccomended), the best situated if sparsely furnished MTDC cottages you will ever find. They are actually built on a cliff!! When the lights are out, the wind howls its tale of woe, the stars come out, and you cower in the bitter cold having hot rice and dal..outstanding, especially after a tiring day of climbing and exploring!

An outstanding site for sky gazing, and truly romantic for those inclined.

Hmmm...I could go on, and on, and on..but lemme stop here. For more specific information, mail me!

Cheers, and temme what you think!
