All Rain .. No Coat !!

The ’’movie’’ doesn’t really move .. going by the speed today’s movies change tracks, this movie is virtually a stand-still! Its a love story gone sour. The girl (Ash) ditches her neighbourhood boyfriend (Ajay) for a man supposedly rich & flamboyant. Ajay tries convincing her hard that he would earn good money for her, but in vain.

Later, Ajay visits Kolkata in search of loan from friends and visits the much married Ash on a rainy day. He has a borrowed Raincoat (from one of his friends) to save him from the water. Ash welcomes him as if he’s been coming daily! Both of them talk about their past & brag about their present. Ash claims her husband to be a rich high-flier with an MNC and explains that she doesnt go abroad with him for the fear of getting locked in the airplane’s (lo & behold!!) loo!!! Some imagination! Ajay too brags about his TV serials that are on air.

Ash goes out to fetch something to eat for Ajay, meanwhile the entry of Annu Kapoor is rather ’’different’’.. he wants to enter the movie canvas (ie., the Ash-Ajay domain) because he wants to go to the (lo & behold!) loo (again?) !! He then clarifies to Ajay that Ash’s hubby is actually a fraud who has been kicked out of various jobs and is rather absconding. The room is actually sublet on rent by Ash-Hubby to earn some living. And Annu Kapoor is the real landlord!

Moved & shaken, Ajay gives all his collected loan money to Annu as pending rent on Ash’s behalf. Meanwhile Ash who is in the market also discovers that Ajay is broke and leaves her jewellery in Ajay’s borrowed ’Raincoat’.

Altogether a good concept - handled well too, by Rituparno. But somehow it doesnt really evoke a strong bond between the viewer and the two protagonists (Ajay & Ash). Ajay is rather restrained in his act & Ash tries a bit too hard to behave like a rustic village girl. But somehow the movie doesnt grow on you.

Maybe Rituparno too has tried a bit too hard. He should have left it simple & straight. Weaving the story of Mouli Ganguly was unnecessary. She could have been better off without a lost love story. The movie is for people who are Romantics... who like their coffee real hot.. so that they can enjoy it longer!

But if you expect any ’sparks’ flying.. forget it. The movie doesnt move.
