I lived in Ranchi for about an year. For half os this period, I lived in Sirom Toli. It is near the rail more and at a walkable distance from the city centre. For the other half I lived in Nagra Toli, near the Hari Om Towers. Though I had a good time there with my friends, I would have to say that Ranchi misses the charm of a capital city. Its like a small town and even its railway station doesnt have more than four platforms. Even a bhagalpur station is bigger than that. Some of the places youd like to visit there are Pahadi mandir, Rock garden, and some of the waterfalls. None of them are too great. The weather is almost adverse in winter as single digit temperature is a norm rather than exception that time of the year. All in all, I wouldnt recommend Ranchi that much. It has nothing special that one can miss.
