The following review gives all the details about this movie and the answers to these questions.
”Rang De Basanti” starts with a British girl Sue (Alice Patten) who is very fond of the tales of India and Indians and how they managed to get independence and freedom from the British. Her grandfather used to be an officer in 1930s in British occupied India and by reading his diary Sue came to know tales of Indian heroes like Chandrashekhar Azad or Bhagat Singh that how they dared to rebel against the British for freedom.Sue finds the tales of these Indian heroes interesting enough to make a film on them and for this purpose, she flies off to India. In India, she auditions several people for her film, but none of them seems to be impressive enough to carry off the roles of Indian heroes.A disappointed Sue, is accompanied by her Indian friend, Sonia (Soha Ali Khan) who decides to cheer Sue up and so Sonia takes Sue to her friends; DJ (Aamir Khan), Karan (Siddharth), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) and Sukhi (Sharman Joshi).Sue meets all of them and discovers that they are not even half as patriotic as their ancestors as their heroes. They are non-serious and aimless and never even seem to remember people like Bhagat Singh, etc. due to whom all of them got independence. After spending a night with Sonia and her friends, she feels that this gang of friends seems perfect to play the main leads in her film. When she offers them to work in her film, all of them don`t take this offer seriously and just laugh it off. They feel that all the Indian heroes of 1930s are not relevant in today`s times, but after lots of conviction they agree to work in Sue`s film. Thus, their knowledge about the sacrifices of their nation`s heroes begin to increase and they start living their lives. They start understanding the problems these heroes faced but problems also occur in their own lives too, when Sonia`s fiancée Ajay (R.Madhavan) who works in the Indian Air Force, dies and sacrifices his life for his nation. They discover that the defence minister was responsible for Ajay`s death and at the suggestion of Sonia, they decide to kill the defence minister, in revenge. It is then that they realize the importance of making sacrifices for their nation and or loving their country. Thus, a generation awakens.
The film consists of a talented star cast and all of them deliver according to their best abilities.
Aamir Khan is fantastic as the careless and hip-hop DJ who eventually starts taking life seriously. Though, Aamir Khan is playing the role of a young college guy in this film, despite being such a senior actor but his greatest achievement lies in this fact, that not even once he lets you feel that he is a miscast for this role.He gels so well with all the other younger actors, that the outcome is very natural. Aamir Khan yet again reconfirms the high opinion that the audiences have about this talented actor, through this film.
Sharman Joshi is equally good as the naughty and always-in-a-funny-mood Sukhi. He manages to raise a few laughs at places and displays great histrionic skills in the scene where he accuses Karan of being a traitor.
Siddharth is another talented actor whose portrayal of Karan is excellent. He is very effective especially in the scenes, that he shares with his father and in the climax.
Kunal Kapoor makes a comeback after his first and previous film ”Meenaxi” and I knew that the guy had lots of potential after watching him in his previous film.He is quite likeable in the role of Aslam.
Soha Ali Khan finally comes up with a performance that will make the viewers notice her and her acting skills. This is definitely her best performance till date and she does not only act well but also looks prettier than ever. Her new look in this film, suits her a lot and for the first time, I`ve found her pretty.
Alice Patten, the foreign actress, is another excellent performer in this film. Her face expressions, her dialogue delievery and her HINDI seem perfect. She is much better than all the actresses who enter Bollywood every Friday and don`t even know how to speak Hindi, despite being Indians.
Others are also very impressive.Atul Kulkarni, as always is efficient and Kirron Kher as always looks adorable.Anupam Kher in a role with grey shades, manages to leave a strong impression on the viewers.R.Madhavan and Waheeda Rehman are also first-rate.
Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra deserves a pat on his back to come up with a film wwhich makes the audience sit up and think for a while. It`s not that kind of a film that has been copied from a Hollywood film or tries to be sleazy with the inclusion of item numbers. This is one of the most original films, I`ve ever seen in Bollywood.Running the story of all the Indian heroes of the past along with the story of today`s generation, is indeed a novel idea and to come up with such a different idea, the efforts of the director need to be appreciated. The film has lots of interesting moments. The scenes between the friends are quite entertaining and the ‘romantic’ angle between DJ and Sue is very subtle and well woven into the script.
