Rann has many flaws - the conspiracy which leads to a Prime Minister being overthrown is a little too simplistic, a corrupt politician wins an election and becomes a Prime Minister a little too easily, the Delhi power corridors and media backdrop just do not seep through, a hindu muslim relationship is also regressively focused on, and the plot, is also a little too grim and serious - But, inspite of these flaws, this is a well crafted movie by RGV and he is ably supported by Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal, Sudeep, Riteish Deshmukh, Mohnish Behl and Rajpal Yadav, with their brilliant performances. For these performances alone, Rann is worth the price of its ticket.
But to begin at the beginning, Amitabh Bachchan runs India 24x7, an ethical news channel which is losing TRPs, and money, because of it’s principals. On the other hand, rival channel Headlines 24, run by Mohnish Behl is doing very well because of its sensationalist approach. Sudeep, is Amitabh’s son who is trying his best to keep his channel afloat. Due to some circumstances, Sudeep is forced into a conspiracy by corrupt opposition leader, Paresh Rawal and his industrialist brother in law. The hatching of this conspiracy, and its eventual resolution is what Rann is about.
While this is definitely a well crafted movie, the expertise with which RGV has captured bollywood, underworld and Mumbai - is not matched when he portrays media, politics and Delhi. But yet again, RGV has been able to extract minimal but superlative performances from all his actors - Paresh Rawal as the corrupt politician, Riteish as the young idealist, Mohnish Behl as the ambitious channel head, Sudeep as an ethically confused scion and above them all, Amitabh Bachchan as the principled Media baron - all of them have given great performances. The movie also has very good(but distractingly unconventional) cinematography by Amit Roy, a well crafted script and RGVs expert touch. Because it does all this, while raising a contemporary issue - Rann is an eminently watchable movie.
Not your typical popcorn family entertainer, but if you appreciate a serious movie about contemporary India - then Rann will definitely absorb you. We give it 3.5 stars.
