I have been Readers Digest for over 15 years now. Its one of the magazines I grew up reading, though mostly at libraries and bought it whenever I somehow missed it at library. I still have about 25 issues scattered over last 15 years. About a year and a half back, I finally subscribed the magazine, as I have cut back on my library trips after getting a job (School/College days were great: all those free afternoons...). But the sad thing is, I can read the few old issues I have again and again, but many articles in recent issues are not even worth reading. The quality is going downhill steadily. As if this was not enough, I get my subscribers copy by the end of the month, by which time, I have read it somewhere else. The magazine is consistently delivered near the 20th of the month every time, while it is available upto 3 weeks earlier at the news stands. I have talked to several subscribers, and this is the case with almost everyone. It seems like a policy to send unsold copies to subscribers. Maybe it helps them to reduce number of copies printed by having an estimate by mid month of the total sales, and printing extra copies for subscribers only if needed. Im sure some will say that subscribers copies have it written on the cover that its a subscribers copy, but its a piece of cake for publisher to put appropriate cover just before despatching.
