Readers Digest is, for me the most satisfying of all magazines. Its the magazine I grew up with and thats always good to go back and read.
When I was a child, I only read the humour columns. As I grew older, I read more and more. Finally, I was reading it from cover to cover. I love it.
I used to go through magazines from the 60s and 70s which were all stacked in my grandfathers attic !!!!!! ( Its been around for ages )
Readers Digest is made up of articles reprinted from magazines and books, and various original material. Even if I had time and money to read all these articles and books, not all of them really interest me. However, there are occasional articles even in the most unlikely sources that I enjoy. Readers Digest does the work of finding them for me.
The entire magazine typically falls between 160 to 200 pages ? that also includes a large number of full- and half-page uninteresting advertisements. The magazine also has a number of regular features that appear every month?
Regular Features
~ Word Power
The definitive reader?s digest quiz to test vocabulary. A number of words are given for which you must deduce a meaning from four possible choices. The answers are listed overleaf. I almost always come away having learned one or two words.
~ RD Challenge
Another word game which varies from month to month - typically plays with synonyms, missing letters and associations between words. Can be quite tricky ? it takes time, brain power and effort ? I enjoy it.
~ Laughter, the Best Medicine
A miscellaneous hodgepodge of humorous ramblings and utterings from the public at large. There are usually about ten jokes, most being very amusing. I have never noticed a particular joke being printed in more than one edition, so I presume they are screened to make sure they have not been in the magazine before.
~ Life?s like that
A collection of stories, again submitted by the public, this time anecdotes from their own lives that are typically based in humorous coincidence, double meaning or irony.
~ All in a Day?s Work
Personal anecdotes from readers about strange events that happened in their working lives. Some of these can be a little bland, I have to say.
~ Quotable Quotes
A number of celebrity quotes from the previous month, generally taken from other magazines and television shows. They try to mix them up ? some are humorous, some insightful, others just plain stupid?
~ Humour In Uniform
Here we have humourous incidents from the services sector ( Army, Navy, Air Force ). Again all true happenings from the readers.
~ Virtual Hilarity
Computer humour from readers around the world.
Every issue contains Drama In Real Life, which covers a rescue and is usually the topic and cover story in issues of late. Its inspiring to see people in real life help each other or overcome amazing obstacles. These feel-good stories are uplifting. If youre the grouchy type whos decided to read this far, then Im sure youre going to grumble about the positiveness presented in this magazine. Frankly, I like the moralistic approach that many of the articles contain, which is why I continue to subscribe to this digest.
Also, if you are reading through these sections and think to yourself Hey I have a story like that you can always submit your story to Readers Digest and if they use it they will pay you for it.
Readers Digest is a great magazine. It fits nicely in your bag , and is always handy when you need something to read. The articles make you feel happier, and smarter. It lifts you up and it and makes you feel good. This is a magazine that the whole family can enjoy.
