I am what you can classify as being part of the burgeoning upper middle class in India - the target of all the latest retail boom industry. First there were the small retail chains - Trinethra, Apna Bazaar, etc. Now there are the big chains - Reliance, Magna, Spencers, Food World that are pumping big money into setting up stores.
Reliance started its first retail store in Hyderabad near my house and out of everyone in the family my mom was the most excited as the new store was very close to my house. It wasn’t quite different in any other house I guess because the store was full of house wives wying with each other in filling up the baskets and trolleys.
The stores look great on the outside. The red and green brand colors are refreshing. The service guys and girls are helpful. Was surprised when each of them greeted my mother (not me :( ) with a namaste. They knew where to pull the right strings to make a sale.
Neway the display of items inside the store is pretty good, prices are visible clearly. Variety is good as well. Prices are also reasonable. And for the lazy folks they have chopped and packed vegetables for items like Veg Biryani, fried rice, Veg Pulao, etc.
All in all a good experience. Hope they continue the supply of good quality in the days to come.
