Reliance GSM service; probably the worst in Delhi

If you thought everything related to Reliance or associated with its name was always topnotch, think again. The GSM service launched with much fanfare and marketed as ’simply reliance’ is in fact a pack of lies and the simple truth is that customer comes last for the company.

After getting activated a prepaid account SIM you have to go for a certain first recharge* in order to enter the plan of your choice.

There are three plans to choose from i. e., @50 p/min, @1p/sec or @Re1 per 3min. Make your choice and pay the first recharge amount (presently Rs 61 for the per second call billing option) and you’d be told that your choice would come into effect within the next 24 hours. Till then they will continue to charge you @Re1/min for local and Rs 1.5/min for STD calls. The matter rests there as nothing would happen in ’the next 24 hours’ and you’ll find yourself in pursuit of their hard to find customer care executives as connecting to *333 is another nightmare.

And if you are lucky enough to get through to one such executive, be prepared to hear a polite excuse, ’Sir, actually it takes 48 hours to get the plan of your choice activated’. 24 have suddenly turned 48 while fleecing of the customer continues.

But your problems don’t end there. GPRS comes next. Obviously, like with any other carrier, you need to obtain ’settings’ but at Reliance they won’t come automatically with an SMS. The user has to request the customer care and manually create a connection after the settings are sent in two messages.

Thereafter, it works fine subject to availability of ’network’ and signal strength.

Network / signal is comparatively week and, at times, making a call is like climbing a mountain. While Reliance failed to connect, making a call from the same spot through two other leading carriers was effortless and interruption free.

To conclude, I’d say Reliance is infact a disaster and the service is deceptive. It is not ’simply reliance’ but ’deceptively reliance’ - the worst thing to happen to the Indian mobile user.

In Delhi at least, stay away from Reliance GSM service. There are better service providers around
