Life in Riyadh for Women

I lived for three years in Jeddah but had an opportunity to travel to Riyadh few times. In Saudi in general the life of a woman depends on what she does. A lot of women go to Saudi as a spouse and they mainly remain housewives. In general their life revolves around the family and friends. If you are very ambitious it will be a bit more trying at times due to restrictions of movement for a female. There are restrictions for a woman to travel unescorted and she can not drive. This also applies to women from western countries but they also cope with it.

I knew many a women used to like it there because the life is on a set pattern and one gets to spend all the time with the family. There are all the modern amenities and latest gadgets at your disposal so the life is not a struggle day to day. Most families have a good circle of friends and they meet each other very often. They generally cook, gossip or watch videos. Hindi films and Pakistani dramas are available and passing the day is not difficult. With Internet now one is easily connected. All females have to wear the black dress and cover all the parts of body when they are out of the house. I am told one gets used to it. Riyadh being capital of Saudi and the home of King, the religious customs are more stringently applied. There are no cinemas to go to and females have to be escorted by a male member of the family. It is not easy to study in Saudi except if you are a distance student. Women are generally employed in the field of Nursing or teaching in schools. On the positive side women can get good rest and they get some quality time to themselves. There is no trouble on the roads, but dress code and religious strictness is more in Riyadh than other places in Saudi.

Overall it is not bad place for just a few years to make a quick buck and move out. Because the time you spend in Saudi is as if the clock has stopped.
