There will always remain a thin line between the same pattern story treatment by two different areas directors. You have seen Singham, totally a south Indian script and treatment but directed by a non-south Indian director Rohit Shetty, and then you have Wanted and Rowdy Rathore, totally a south Indian script and treatment directed by south Indian director Prabhudheva. And this difference will always remain, since the one who is always making Bollywood movies, knows the taste and the way a movie should be handles unlike here. Yes, the movie is a pure masala entertainer, but yes, youll (the ones like me) will always hate some of the touch this movie gave. This movie has so many songs, suddenly a lot of dancers dancing, sudden scene changes, high octane kicks and ghoonsas, fast speaking public, But thank God, this movie doesnt have a separate comedy track like Wanted and has entertainment which was missed in Prabhudhevas earlier bollywood venture, hence I liked it to some extent.
I dont know if Rowdy word is as famous in Bihar as in south, but lets accept that it is like that, so we have a hero, a thief Shiva (Akshay Kumar) who steal everything just like that, and who has an exceptional power of reversing a scene which he likes, just by reversing his mind like a tape and clicking the play button. Not only this he can even zoom, and increase the sound too just like that, and he falls in love with a macho heroine (sorry! but I think in my whole life I can never be able to accept this heroine as a heroine, because she just dont fit) Paro (Sonakshi Sinha), and macho heroine too falls in his magic of beating drums with actions of his hand just like that (the chinta tata chita = lathi on bum = chatni pattern), and those drums have the dolby effect. Actually they copied my papas walking style :P to match as a dance style. Now theres one more guy on loose - ASP Vikram Rathore (again Akshay Kumar, unlike to the sweet ACP Rathore of Sarfarosh) who beat the guts out of goondas of Devgarh Bihar, led by Baapji (Nassar) and Titla (Supreeth Reddy), the tailor-made south Indian movie villians. But he got hit in his head, as explained by Ins (YashPal Sharma, he surprises me as an Inspector!) in a flashback. So since he died, now our Shiva has to take charge of that area, and to wipe out the goondas in his comic style. And somehow on the road we found bechari Paro waiting for him. :P
Somehow, this movie scores in entertainment and only suitable for old-pattern cinema halls since only there you can find seeti-bajau junta, and you can enjoy the movie, since it is a pure total mass film. Akshay Kumar looks dhaansu in Rathore role, and equally lovable in comic role, and in film I like it best when he switches to the role of Rathore. He can do wonders if he wants to. Locations of rock-mountain was too good, and some fighting scenes too, especially when Akshay imitates the action of shooting from revolver and goondas cars fly in air, just like that. I can never like Sonakshi as heroine, so lets not talk about him, oh sorry, her. Rest actors passed their time well. Amazingly I find the songs good, all the songs music was good, (did they copied!!) Dhadang Dhang Dhang, Chinta ta, Pritam Pyare, "Chammak challo and "tera ishq bada teekha, all are good. Lyrics were normal but music was good (Sajid-Wajid), and I loved the characteristic tune of Rowdy Rathore, I can say it the reversing theme, which was prevalent in Dhadang Dhang song, and it was the best picturised song of the movie. Movie is a remake of Vikramarkudu a telugu movie (OH MY GOD, its Ravi Tejas movie, tabhi main sochu howcome this long long moustache of Akshay, I seriously hate Ravi Teja), and from where the original Chinta ta song was taken. Direction was not required, as I can think anybody can direct these kind of movies :P Some similarities were drawn from Singham, like our own Mantriji Anant Jog, and the left hand henchman of main goonda - Ashok Samarth (the shiva of singham), and then you can find one fight scene simlar, you can hear shers voice in background in one scene, you can see police jeep flying in the air, and stopping in same pattern (not exactly marvellous as was in Singham). Akshay did Gangajal act in Singham style, but still I would anyday prefer Singham or Gangaajal over Rathore. Dialogues are good, 2 examples "DONT ANGRY ME", and "Main jo kehta hoon vo karta hoon, par main jo nahin kehta vo main definately karta hoon", but I missed "Aata majhi satkel" and "aali re aali, aata tumhari baari aali". 2nd half was good, as compared to the 1st one. Background score in some scenes was loud, as is the trend, and this movie is a no-brainer, so just forgot that you ever have something called brain in your heads, and enjoy just like that. I am liking these new-breed-of-cops movies a lot, although I like the character more than the movie itself (like Chulbul Pandey)
I will say, yes for this movie, but its not worth for a multiples watching, instead go to a small old-time theatres and enjoy the movie in whole ho-halla. My take 3/5.
