Avoid Royal Sundaram

Quite similar to the previous reviewer, we had a harrowing experience with Royal Sundaram. My wife had to be rushed to hospital some months ago with acute pain in the stomach. It turned out to be a cyst rupture and she was later diagnosed as having Endometriosis and treated for it.

The bills came to about 85K. And our first claim to RS was rejected saying that what we did was an infertility treatment. I understand if voluntary medical procedures like treating infertility or IVF is not covered by insurance. But ours was hardly voluntary - she was rushed to emergency in the middle of the night.

We then took a letter from the doctor saying that it was not infertility treatment. They sat on this for several weeks. We reminded them several times that we cannot approach another insurance company if they delay beyond 60 days of discharge. But to no avail.

Finally we get another rejection letter that Endometriosis was a pre-existing condition and pre-existing conditions are not treated WHETHER THE CLAIMANT WAS AWARE OF IT OR NOT.

Now I can always argue that there are several bacteria in my body which can give me one of several diseases. We all have such "pre-existing" conditions that we are unaware of. Does it mean that none of them are covered by insurance? How can the claimant be expected to be aware of all possible diseases breeding inside their bodies. The burden of exclusion is on the insurance company if they need to draw such lines. We were never asked to undergo any medical tests before taking insurance. We have never refused to undergo any such pre-insurance exclusion tests. Insurance is taken for unexpected and unaware eventualities. Saying that unawareness is not an excuse is trite. Insurance is all about SECURING AGAINST THE UNKNOWN.

The entire process, including the attitude of the staff has left an enormous bad taste. Insurance seems to be nothing more than another slick money-making process.

My suggestion to other consumers is - avoid Royal Sundaram if you can and look for someone more reliable.
