.. and they live happily ever after. Really ? This basic premise is what attracted me , and most others, to see this one.
Two lovers elope, get married against parental opposition and live happily ever after. Thats where a normal bollywood movie ends. and thats where Saathiya promises to begin. So, we dont live in town called perfect and differences are bound to crop up and .. umm .. then what ? I didnt really get what happened after that.
I failed to see anything insightful in the movie. And I say this with certain conviction as we; an engg-doc couple; amply relate to the leading characters of the film. My wife did not see any realism in how a married Docs life is portrayed. She did play basket; not in miniskirt; but thats not what she meant. A sane doc will not expect a non-medico (I get squeamish at sight of blood :-) for shoulder to cry on for what she has to go thru during a normal day at Indian govt hospital.
The situations shown may look sacrilegious to bachelors and unrequited romantics (or may be I am not that type .. ha ha ha :) but they are not effective enough to drive home the point that two sensitive, caring individuals can sometimes be insensate to others needs. What is shown to be the cause of discord is chilling cold confrontations by either counterparts. This may boost young lovers exchanging knowing glances in dark theatres like this wont happen to us but tie-died lovers can only exchange secret glances of how messier it usually gets even with either trying best to be in others shoes.
So, was I expecting some magic potion to avoid domestic disturbance !? No. But, it was to convey some message in the end right ? Something like Keep the flame burning or Go for a second Honeymoon or atleast await a sequel ! before the end credits roll. I did not get why it ended without getting anywhere and what was the logical end.
Its a good movie with great style, fabulous song and dance, solid believable performances and fresh premise. It also remains faithful to Mumbai life and sure has a middle-class realism to it. It shows a very effective use of flash-back, flash-forward technique. It actually helps the flow of story, a la DCH, instead of confusing it , a la Kaante.
Where it fails is in delivering the premise it started with. It kind of leaves you where you started .. wondering if they lived happily ever after ?!?
Ultimately, as for tangibles its a great movie. As for my personal opinion, its not. So, I AM giving it a high rating and I recommend you give it a try and make up a good ending to suit yourself.
