'Blue' after 'Black'

The blue sublimity of love pervades the ballad on screen called Saawariya.Have you ever loved someone who you always knew that you cannot hold back?

When longing becomes just a cup of poison or several cups of it and stretches till eternity…In concentrating on these aspects Saawariya failed as a film. It could have been made into a stage musical.

Ranbir Raj, the sweet happy go lucky boy transforms into a man in his journey of love with Saqina. Saqina’s heart and body is committed to Iman. I know a boy who was saying goodbye to his classmate when she was going home to attend a marriage. A week away was making him grumble and his affectionate friend laughed and said: “Agar tum aise karoge to fir baad mei jee nahi paoge”

She was in love with another guy and one day she did go away forever. Did he not know, initially may be not…but what happens when you have already started eating at a place without being conscious that you do not have a purse. The price is always high tormenting…a kind of penalty and when even hoping seems to be hopeless.

Even Saqina acknowledged Ranbir as a good friend, she does not cross line even when he kisses her and she stops him from reaching to her lips. Saqina had no fantasy with Ranbir. The blue of Saawariya never is part of Saqina whose color matches with Iman’s black. There was nothing bad in Iman. He was probably the better option for her with his regular rent paying capabilities and Ranbir’s inability to pay his rent. Ranbir is like a poor minstrel. Even at the end of his journey he is left standing at the same place.

His immaturity is apparent when he comes to the chandramukhi like character played by Rani. The wounded boy wants to forget the pain of love. His love wins over his jealousy. Rani’s character is like his conscience. She is also the narrator.

Well Saawariya can be a name of Krishna but as far as I can remember, it was Radha who suffered the pangs more explicitly. Did Krishna feel nothing when he left her never to return. Does the fulfillment of love lie in separation?

The movie moves like a poetry, like a sound of flute. One of the flaws is the song ‘Jab se tere naina’…pathetic choreography I would say with no context. The music is soothing.

Heartbreaks can make or break you. If you are in love with poetries then watch the movie carefully. The movie has many flaws but has nice symmetry. Ranbir met Saqina on the bridge and that’s the place where she meets Iman in the end. When Ranbir is happy he wears shades of red. Ranbir accuses Saqina of stupidity when she waits for Iman but ironically it’s Ranbir who is foolish in going after her. One of the flaws of the film is making Ranbir’s character so feminine visually. And if you really take Ranbir’s character to be that of a girl…well it makes more sense to so many scenes in the movie.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali could have easily named this movie ’Blue’ keeping in mind his other movie ’Black’.

’Ahista ahista’ the Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan starrer has similar plot though storylines differ a bit.
