Discalimer: This is a preview , not a regular review, as the movie is yet to released. It discusses the possible plot of the movie in case it is really inspired by White Nights. I secretly wish it has some hidden twist and better, altogether a different plot.
This preview starts from the premise that Saawariya(S) is inspired from the 1957 Italian movie Le Notti Bianche known as White Nights in English, by realist director Luchnio Visconti.
This movie was based on the Short Story by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, which based in St Pietersberg, whereas the movie was based in Venice - the city of Canals and Bridges. Do you visualize the bridge so prominent in all the promos and covers of S. And also the snow which is so characteristic of the polar Russia.
The Bridge is also a symbolic connection between the two different worlds to which the main protagonists belong. The boy is a newcomer to the city and the Girl has lived in the other part of city under protection of her overprotectionist grandmother. That is why the boy even though new, knows more about the city than the girl.
They meet on the bridge where he saves her from committing suicide. She had been waiting for the return of the tenant - the man she fell in love with and who had left a year ago with the promise to come back in a year. One year is past and there is no trace of the man.
The boy reaches out to help the girl in the reunion, though he fell in love with her at the first sight. He is given the job of postman to carry the letter of the girl to the man who is supposed to be staying in a hotel.
The boy and the girl spend an eventful evening in a restaurant ballroom where the boy gallantly displays his dance skills to varied genres of music to impress his princess. They come out merrily only to be greeted by the man who had indeed returned. What happens next?
Original movie was a masterpiece and commercial disaster. It was shot within the walls of studio and had mostly night as the backdrop. The final scene when the man comes back, there is a sequence of eponymous snow fall.
This movie will have select following and going by the genious like instincts of SLB could be a multiple award winning movie. The actor in spotlight will be the boy - Ranbir who resists all the temptations in favour of the innocent Raj-Kapoorish love for the girl. Rani is playing a pr*stitute. And Yes, you guessed it right , the man is played by Salman.
Onw wonders why it took SLB ages to make this movie if it is indeed frame to frame inspired by some classic!
All the best for another quassi-noir outing. Competition is from a Happy, pure popcorn movie.
