A definite fall from grace for Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has in the past mesmerised us with masterpieces like Devdas, Hum dil de chuke sanam and Black. His style of films are unmistakably different with spellbinding visuals, immaculate cinematography, great music both playback and background, memorable performances form the cast and most importantly a story so well depicted that it lingers on with the viewer long after he has watched the movie.Sawariya isn’t any different either except the fact that the story never really grips the viewer and he starts loosing interest very early in the movie and then tends to ignore so many other aspects of the movie which are otherwise very good.

The movie is depicted in some sort of a weird fantasy land where a young lad clad with a guitar and a heart of gold is a stranger to everyone. In a matter of days he becomes the darling of everyone he meets from his old landlady to a bunch of prostitutes(strangely throughout the movie he only meets women). Then he comes across a beautiful young lady who sweeps him off his feet who seems to be waiting for somebody.Being as charming as he is, immediately they develop a friendship and get to spend  time together. As they get to know about each other the boy is heart broken as he becomes aware of the fact that she is actually engaged to someone else who has never shown up in months. But it’s the belief of the girl on her fiancee that never seems to wane despite the fact that her fiancee has apparently forgotten her.The boy tries hard and almost wins her back but in the end the fincee appears suddenly and takes the girl away from him.

Quite clearly the story lacks to generate interest(I have forotten the name of the characters) and added to that almost a dozen pointless sequences have stretched the movie far beyond redemption. The poor detailing of the almost all the characters also adds to the lack of interest shown by the viewer. In short if you watch it till the end like I did you might just have to search for aspirin when you come out of the theatre.

Still there are quite a few good things that are worth remembering first being the music with some really great melodies and second being the art design with sets in different shade of aquamarine. The lead pair have performed well especially Ranbir kapoor who I think has all the potential to make it big in the future. But as I mentioned earlier the story which is considered the soul of a movie is missing and hence all these good points are overshadowed by the disust generated in the viewer.

All in all I have to say that it was a truly regrettable and forettable experience for me and in my opinion a disaster of a movie .
