There is no denying the fact that it is a painstakingly made film with laboriously tended to detailing and out of the world(literally.since it is a fantasy land) location. It is an experiment by the Director or rather auteur of this film Sanjay Leela Bhansali.even though it is based on Dostoyevskys’Four Nights", to present a language which is new.Does new necessarily man good? for some it does.for others they want to settle back in their comfort zone of OSO and Heyy baby and say an empatic."NO".
Ranbir and Sakina the the main protagonists in this fable, are newcomers with an impressive pedigree well exploited by SLB. he does not let you forget that for a minute especially Ranbirs parentage. with RK looming large and AWARA and rain drenched songs, umbrella and hte works. It put me off this bit. If it is a la la land.then why bring elements that make it seem real? it is paradoxical and not quite digestible.
On the flip side, opulence, garndeur, the various moods, shades, hues of blue are a treat. The director went all out to prove his artistry or eye for aesthetics. The story line and end is unusual. some would say so ununsual that it does not gel. I may agree but upto a point. Just the freshnes of approach is impressive.
None who I went with liked the film. It is not universally appealing but has a niche audience. The picturiastion of most songs was good except for Mashallah. when the men in prayer began to dance.it was ridiculous.
Ranbir Raj is a cutie pie. my current heart throb.he will last I tell you this lad. he has got it all. Sonam is likable.sweet, delicate, perfectly made up and all that. But her caharacter was sort of quite layered so difficult to relate with.Nonetheless a new star on the horizon.both of them.
Cinematography under the vigilante of SLB is mind blowing as are the sets. One doesnt know who to give credit to. the executionists or the Director.since the vision matters. Or why was it never done earlier?
Rani Mukherji excelled in her cameo. She is like old wine now. mature and classy.
Zohra Sehgal and Begum Para was so good. fantastic.
All in all a must see to gage whether or not you respond sympathetically to aesthetics of the kind or does it leave you numb/angry.disppointed.
It worked for me. flaws and all. Though I would have liked to give it a 2.5 not 3 but there is no provision for this on Mouth shut. every little decimal matters dearies. at Mouthshut.:)
