Back to melodies

Vidhyasagar, a well known music composer in south India came into limelight with some refreshing melodies in early 90?s but was less noticed and popular among the masses as he concentrated more on melodies than fast numbers when he started his career. His yester year albums like ?Priyam?, ?Karna?, ?Uyirodu Uyiraga?, ?Pasum Pon? all had some excellent melodies. But soon after he became popular he started doing usual gana, dampanguthu, fast and peppy numbers to hold on the commercial race and one could hardly find melodies in his albums.

After his commercially successful albums like ?Run?, ?Dhool?, ?Thirumalai?, ?Gilli?, ?Madhurae?, ?Sullan? which had only one melody in each, he comes with a refreshing melodious album ?Sathurangam?in the league of his last year album melodious ?Parthiban Kanavu?.

Enna Thanthiduvaen Singers: Karthik, Srilekha Parthsarathy

It has got some nice sitar pieces all the song. The beats are very simple and rhythmic and don?t disturb the melody. The tune is very melodious and reminds us Illayaraja?s 80?s composition thought it is not at all a copied one but the overall tone sounds similar. The lethargic ?Thana Thom thana na na? bit in the second interlude sounds good. I don?t why he chose Srilekha (famous for singing Gana songs) for this song even though she does a neat job, her voice becomes flat without any emotions at some places. Kathik as usual excels in this song with right emotions and dictions in singing.

Ennenna Pidikkum Singers: Sunitha Sarathy, Shalini

It is a usual heroine introduction song with full of techno stuff. I usually skip this song. I am not against techno song but it should have something new to deliver. But this song fails to deliver any new sound. And the thing that annoys me the most is the singing of Sunitha Sarathy. I don?t like her voice when she sings in Tanglish. Her singing lost the soothing freshness of the same ?Hey Good bye nanba?. Don?t want to talk more about this song.

Vizhiyum Vizhiyum Singers: Harini, Madhubalakrishna

It is a winning melody all the way. Vidhyasagar has a formula for composing melodies and this song is a signature of Vidhyasagar?s style. The song will start with vocals alone with some mild sounds but without any instruments in the background and when we start liking the tune, the lyrics and sweetness in the voice of the singers the rhythmic mild beats will join the song later and enhances the melody and stops us from going to sleep. I should laud him for choosing right singers for this song. Harini is getting better in each and every song, she has very refreshing and soothing voice and with that gift she adds beauty by giving proper emotions while singing.

Madhubalakrishna is again a growing singer and he has a bright future with a voice similar to Yesudas, he along with harini does wonders in singing in this song. No great twists and complex ghamukkas, but that simplicity adds value to the song. The idea of male and female vocals alternatively singing each word in a single line is something new and sounds good. The only thing that strikes negative is the mild beats is the same as the beats of A.R.Rahman?s ?Konjum Mainakkalae song?, he could have added a different beat to the song but anyway that doesn?t harm the melody. For me this is the best song of the album. The lyricist has well played with words.

Aaduvomae Pallu Paaduvomae Singer: Manicka Vinayakam

This song is a composition of a poem by Great Tamil Poet Subramaniya Bharathiyar. The sound of flute, violins, folky beats and rustic voice of the singer together takes us to pre independence era and the composition style is that of MSV?s 60?s folk songs. The new version of many times composed poem is refreshing and melodious. The best part of the song is the usage of violin orchestration in the background all through the song and also in the interludes.

Anbe Anbe Singer: Karthik

Yet another haunting romantic melody with a good usage of piano and sax all through the song. Karthik is extraordinary in this song; he is growing more with and each and every song because he gives importance to expressions in the voice while singing, there is a lot of chance of Karthik turning to be next S.P.Balasubramaniam in tamil film music. The flute and violin interludes are good as well in the interludes. You can play this song in the background when you are having a candle light dinner with your beloved.

Ambulimama Singer: KK, Sujatha

Again a bad one and nothing new in this song. I never listen to this song and just for writing this review; I heard the complete song once. It was pathetic to listen this song and no point in writing a review on the same. Both the singers are not given enough of their caliber. Not interested in writing much about this song.

This album has 4 good melodies and 2 bad one?s anyway I recommend it for its melody content. Vidhyasagar should come up with such melodies often.
