Such a beautiful and crystal clear vision of the director which was so transparent that its glaze could have affected the hearts and minds of its spectators with a truly sparkling effect. Not only did the movie successfully struck the chord with its audience but also put forward a message along with it.The innocent charm of Anil Kapoor left the viewers spellbound by the magical performance especially in this movie. This role was justifiably tailormade for this magnificent actor.
It is the story of a young cherubic son of a family headed by Utpal Dutt who has three sons and two daughters. All of them are settled in their personal lives except the youngest daughter and his youngest son who happens to be Saahib, the role enacted by Anil Kapoor.Saahib is fond of playing football and performs the role of goal keeper quite efficiently but he is not so good at studies.
Saahib has to face constant nagging by the family members who treat him coldly and demotivate him instead of boosting his morale to be ambitious and successful in life.Saahib has immense self-control and tolerance with the help of which he keeps on listening to their pestering comments patiently.Saahib has a girl in neighbourhood, the role enacted by Amrita Singh. She is very fond of him and keeps on declaring her admiration for the simple hearted and cherubic youth.
But Saahib is least bothered by her antics.I quite liked their chemistry in the movie. It was pretty comical and interesting.Saahib’s youngest sister is supposed to get married but the family is facing financial crisis as Utpal Dutt is unable to manage the required amount and the rest of the members in the family do not wish to spend money in their sister’s wedding. It is only Rakhi, the Bhabhi of Saahib and her husband who are sensible and emotionally sensitive people in the family.
Rakhi requests her father-in-law to sell her jewellery but he refuses her suggestion.Saahib has a very close emotional bond with his Bhabhi. He finds her an embodiment of Goddess Durga and she equally cares for him and is the sole supporter of Saahib in the family.
Saahib’s father decides to sell the house but the property dealers do not wish to accept his proposal. So he thinks of selling his kidney. But the newspaper reaches the hand of Saahib who realizes the complexity of the situation and decides to donate his kidney in order to save the innocent life of the son of a rich industrialist. But Saahib demands 50, 000 rupees before the operation and is provided the sum as per the promise.
Saahib returns home and gives the amount to his father saying that the amount has been given by their eldest sister who is married to a businessman and resides in Pune. His father earlier thinks that he possibly could have committed a robbery but when Saahib provides the excuse of his eldest sister , he gets down to believe him.
Saahib again lies of a football match the next day and the reality was that it was the day scheduled for his kidney donation.Saahib goes to the hospital as per the plan and eventually donates the kidney despite being aware of the fact that it ruined his career in sports. But the modesty of Saahib is overwhelming in the sense that he asks the father of the diseased son to give him a job in his firm so that he would be able to pay back the amount being given to him for kidney donation.
Now when Saahib’s sister arrives a day after the wedding she clears the misunderstanding and tells the truth of having not given any money to Saahib. Now the Bhabhi of Saahib realizes the entire set of events after looking at the newspaper. She reaches the hospital where Saahib was admitted along with her father-in-law.The brothers of Saahib start misinterpreting his vanishing act as an evidence to prove his anti-social act but Rakhi arrives at the scene to explain the entire situation.
Now Saahib is provided the job of a manager as per the promise made before the operation by the father of the diseased son and he starts leading a happy life with his beloved Natasha, the role enacted by Amrita Singh. The song often remembered till date sung by Bappi Lahiri has to be “Pyaar Bina Chaine Kahaan Re”. Another melodious and uplifting track sung by Kishore Kumar happens to be “Kya Khabar Kya Pataa Kya Khushi Hai Gam Hai Kya” which was an emotionally overpowering and situational track.
Truly an enervating and inspirational theme handled dexterously as well. The usual problems faced by middle class family setting is rightly portrayed in the movie.
Simplistic, natural and a sensitive theme which slowly and steadily creeps into the contours of the mind and depths of the heart.A must watch for sensitive and sensible viewers of cinema.
