The tall waiter in a Pathan outfit smiled and handed out what looked like a newspaper. Samarkand – The North West Frontier Express was the name on top of it and I was quite surprised to find that it was in fact the Menu! From the outside, one might dismiss Samarkand as an almost nondescript restaurant, tucked away in the ground floor of Gem Plaza , Infantry Road . But once you step in, you find that it’s an almost different world. Boasting an Afghani cuisine, Samarkand is quite a unique dining experience.

The tastefully done interiors make you feel as if you’ve stepped into the secret cave of Alibaba and the 40 thieves! Right from the Menu and the ambience to the food and the service, a meal at Samarkand will leave you more than just satiated! Of course, a meal at Samarkand would also leave you with a fairly big empty space in your pocket!

Coming to the cuisine, it definitely is a delight for the connoisseurs of the food from the North West . The Shorbas are a must and so is the delightful array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Kababs. And add to it - a nice drink from a collection of Cocktails and Mocktails, you will have a perfect start to a wonderful gastronomic venture! The non-vegetarians also have a small collection of Sea food dishes to choose from! For the main course an array of Specialty Curries will tingle your taste buds and you definitely would want to try the Khameeri Ki Roti or the Naan Baluchistan to go with it. For dessert, don’t miss the delightfully tasty Kulfi or the Bakhlava that is served with Ice cream.

All in all, dining at Samarkand is a pretty unique experience, the hefty bill not-withstanding! With its fantastic food, exemplary service and wonderful ambience, it’ll surely win your vote as one of the better eat-outs in town!
