Outstanding

The show used to be telecasted on star one Monday 9:30pm.It was the same saas-bahu show but with a twist. It was simply fantastic. One could not stop laughing while watching this show. It was a great relieve from everyday tensions and problems.Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai is a story of upper class family residing in the Malabar Hills. All goes well until the elder son of the family marries a middle class girl.

From here starts the complaining of the mother-in-law who is fed up of the middle class attitude of her daughter-in-law and never leaves a moment to insult her. However, the latter is the ‘nosey’ daughter of a detective and equally returns her mother-in-law’s attacks. The only victim who suffers in all this, is the poor son who doesn’t want to hurt his mom or keep his wife unhappy, thus he becomes the scrape goat every time. All this creates humorous situations, which forms the base of the drama.

The characters include Indravadan, the head of the family, who is a retired director of a multinational company and is really a child at heart. He loves his wife and can never say her in anything. He also likes his daughter in-law and tries to help her in every possible way. Maya is his wife (the mother-in-law) who only wants the best for her family and can do anything to maintain her status. Thus, her dislike for Monisha (her daughter-in-law) is obvious.

In addition, since Monisha is aware of this, she tries every possible way to offend her mother-in-law. Like once she quite innocently emptied a container of Dal on the head of Maya’s renowned guest. Her father was a detective and she seems to have the same inquisitive genes in her. Committed to her husband, she sometimes also mothers him, knowing that he is innocent and well meaning.

Sahil is the elder son of the family and the poor husband who always suffers between his mother and his wife. He is a plastic surgeon by profession. He is the only rational character who brings things in equilibrium.

The other character includes Rosesh, he is a typical mama’s boy who is a bachelor because of his mom’s finicky nature. He is very uppity and a wannabe actor.

He also considers himself a great poet and seldom writes poetry on any topic he could lay his eyes on. For instance, he once wrote poetry on three-legged dog, and another on a scooter. The entire family is irritated of this and the members run in every possible direction even before he starts reciting his poetry.

Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai is a classic comedy that brings together veterans Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah with Sumeet Raghavan and Rupali Ganguli. They have wonderfully enacted their characters. The situations picked are hilarious where one automatically enjoys the show without being forced to laugh.

I think the show must start again.
