Li'l Champs: 'Blinded' by sympathy

The Se re ga ma pa series on Zee TV comes every Friday and Saturday. The currently the show is a looking for a star kid singer.

The problem right now as I see it is in the format of the show. The gimmick to rake in more money through public votes apart, the problem here is more serious. The competition has turned out to be one amongst inequals. The show has a contestant who is visually impaired and who was voted out by judges after giving him numerous changes to improve his singing....because they found that his range was limited. However, he was brought back as a wild card entry and now has is amongst the final three contenders of the Li’ll Champs tittle.

So how did someone who is not a very good singer end up in the top three? The most obvious answer and that is how it should have been would be: Through sheer hardwork and constant improvement. Alas, that is not to be. The contender is still in the competition because of sympathy.

His sympathy and add to it his well-manner approach has won him votes from Junta like us outnumbering really talented singers who had to unfortunately leave the show.

What we fail to realise is this is not a sympathy or personality contest unlike Indian Idol where your persona is taken into account. Sa re ga ma pa has always been a basically singing talent hunt.

I think it’s the organisers not the public who is to blame. It’s quite natural for anyone with a heart to feel sympathy with a handicapped person trying to compete with physically fit people.

It’s unfair on the part of show organisers to the rest of the participants to bring back a physically challenged person back as a wild card entry, especially since the junta’s votes are now the decisive factor. They should’ve known that people will vote out of sympathy.

In fact they could’ve seen the opportunity here and maybe planned for a special talent show for physically challenged.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the one with least singing talents becomes the Li’l Champ.

India mein kuch bhi ho sakta hai...
