Good viewing, but nothing phenomenal

Definitely worth watching. Thank god there are no songs in the movie I think just that makes it worth watching. You can concentrate on the actual acting, story characters etc. There is a background score of govinda, govinda, govinda.... that keeps playing which I think was okay. Its trying to do the the Godfather theme score in an Indian setting.

The story line is similar to that of The Godfather although the setting is very much in terms of the regular bollywood gangster-politician nexus movie. Because of that you really do not have to guess where the story is headed. This is something that is different from Godfather where the suspense is real. But to be fair the director RGV does try to do as much as he can. I suppose one cannot make a movie that requires you to use your too much of your brains and get a return on the money that is put in. Remember this is not a Maqbool.

Amitabh Bachchan is definitely restrained in the movie and that makes the character he plays very believable. He carries the movie on his shoulders as he I think he always plays the role of a ’good man forced to do bad things by circumstance’ very well. I think Abhishek Bachchan does a good job as well. Although it feels like he is just emulating his father. I suppose what can you do but follow somebody who does this kind of role ’good man forced to do bad things by circumstance’ the best. The small role played by Katrina Kaif is also very believable thank god they did not make her do an item number. Kota Srinivasa Rao (Silver Mani in the movie) is a gangster friend turned foe who provides comic relief in the film and is definitely funny and does not overdo it. The role of the main villain Zakir (Rasheed in the movie) definitely needed more development.

So if you want to see a decent gangster movie you got one here.
