Every Ram Gopal Verma movie is eagerly awaitedl. When RGV joins hands with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachan the expectations reach sky high. RGVs SARKAR does live up to its collosal expectations. Its a smashing movie with excellent performances from both the Bs.
The film rolls out with the RGV statement that he has been inspired by Mario Puzos literary classic THE GODFATHER, which Francis Ford Coppola immortalized on the big screen in Hollywood. I was getting ready to watch a copy of Godfather(was interested in that as well). As the movie unfolds I realised, RGV thankfully was only inspired, but actually has weaved his own story in a classic or mumbaiya style. It is definitely not a copy of Godfather but only the characters have been copied.
SARKAR is saga of POWER...When the System fails, A Power will rise. That power is Sarkar aka Subhash Nagre played by Amitabh Bachan. A lawmaker in his own right who believes he is right and only thinks of delivering justice, while not bothering about the means. His two sons are Vishu(Kay Kay) and Shankar(Abhishek B). Enter Rashid(name in the movie), a drug peddler seeking Sarkars help in his business. Sarkar denies help on ethical grounds and tells he will not allows him to do drug business. Rashid seeks the help of other people who are seeking to end Sarkars rule so that they can go ahead with their profitable illegal businesses. In the meanwhile Vishu(Kay Kay) is lustfully eyeing a actress and shoots a the girls boyfriend in broad daylight out of anger. This angers Sarkar and he throws Vishnu out of the house. Slowly Sarkars enemies hatch a plot to wrongly convict him in a murder case and then kill him. They manage to wrongly convict Sarkar and arrest him using their power. But, when they are unsuccessful in killing Sarkar, they use Vishnu, as pawn against his own father. How Abhishek thwarts their plans and regains his fathers power forms the conclusion.
Every scene in the movie is like a classic, a textbook of good cinema and just goes to remind that RGV is one of the best directors in India. Some of the scenes have been handled brilliantly and even though there is not much spoken it leaves a huge impact on you. Look out for these scenes
1) When Rashid comes to meet Big B(Sarkar) seeking his help. It is brilliantly shot scene with super expressions from both these actors. Especially the way Rashid keeps blowing his nose and drinks tea. The darkness created in the scene is really impressive.
2) The scene in which Abhishek asks the commissioner to give police protection to his father and later when commissioner slaps Abhishek.
3) The scene of killing of Rashid. Excellent...This scene impresses a lot because of Abhishek. Style personified as he dons the role of new Sarkar.
Abhishek speaks out ...Waise tumhe marne ke liye mujhe aane ki zaroorat nahi thi....Lekin tumhe marte hua dekne ki mazaa khona nahi chahta tha... Next moment the look on Rashids face..He does not speak a word..just stares at Abhishek in disbelief...(no gissa-pita dialogue like.. mujhe chod do).
4) When Abhishek encounters the chief minister in the end..brilliant..Abhishek breathes fire by saying the CBI is ready to take you with evidence. Chief Minister gets mad and tells Abhishek Bacche..Main CM huu..Sarkar chalatha hoon...Do din mein nikhalke choot jauoonga ... Abhishek throws a googly Wahi tho main chahtha hoon..wow
5) The transformation of Abhishek itself is super..Moreover every scene in the movie is a classic and it is difficult to pick just few..
Performance-wise, Abhishek Bachchan is in top form. According to me Abhishek is a better actor than Big B. His style and acting leaves you spellbound. Big B as usual is impressive. Another performance worth mentioning is that of a character named Rashid. His expressions makes you feel frightened and creates tension in the scene. RGV is known to give small actors prominent roles and all of them have played their part well.
However the only complaint is that some scenes just drags the movie..like the one with Tanisha. Why should Katrina be in this movie?.The love triangle should have been deleted and concentrated more on the power saga .The other thing is that Abhisheks revenge should have been given little more highlight and should have included more reels. All said and done Sarkar is brilliantly directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Most of the shots are close-up shots and includes expressions and directorial brilliance to convey the message instead of loud dialogues. Whatever be its Box-Office outcome, Sarkar will be remembered like Godfather and is A classic in the true sense.....
