Rosaleen, the Roths nanny.
May, June and August, are 3 Afro American beekeepers.
The Black Madonna, the beekeepers housekeeper.
.:My Review:.
Before the book begins Lilys mother, (Debora), was only 4 years old when her mother she accidentally shot her mother. Her mother died. She doesnt remember this and fantasies that she lived a wonderful life, in a happy home, until this happened.
The book begins on a peach farm, Southern California.
Lilys father is mean and Lilys only friend is the Afro American housekeeper, Rosaleen.
Rosealeen feels she should have the right to vote, and during the Civil Rights protests, (1954), she is battered by the police.
One day when Rosaleen insults the three worst raciest in town. Lily knows that they will hurt Rosaleen.
Lily has continually rummaging through her mothers possessions, and she remembered that on the back of a picture she had seen the name of a town called Tiburon, (South Carolina).
Lily and Rosaleen make it to Tiburon and they are invited to stay with the 3 eccentric beekeepers, (who Lily calls the calendar sisters)!
The learn about how to take care of bees and how to make honey. They also feel betrayed and guilty. Why?
Who is the Black Madonna? What is the bee a metaphor for? Youll have to read the book to find out!
.:What I Thought:.
I remembered my mother who was a wise lady. This book is about daughters and their mothers, and what it takes to be a real mother.
This book is also about love. This is a book that women should share with one another.
The character were developed very well. I found it funny, inspiring and very sad.
.:The Author:.
Sue was born in the 1950s in southwest Georgia. She graduated for the Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. This is her first book.
.:My Conclusion:.
This is a book that women will love. If a man happens to read it they will find out the secrets of the divine power of women!
If you havent read this book, I hope you will consider reading it.
Thank you for reading my review. Until we meet again I wish you all the good things life can give you.
