Having escaped an Australian maximum security prison, a disillusioned man loses himself in the slums of Bombay, where he works for a drug mafia kingpin, smuggles arms for a crime lord, forges bonds with fellow exiles, and finds love with an elusive woman.
Shantaram is indeed a book that takes writing to another level. From the moment I started reading about Lin, Prabaker, Karla, Abdullah and Abdel Khader Khan their wits and wisdom changed my life and I havent gone anywhere without it in my handbag!
Similar to what Lin stated about Bombay/Mumbai; that there are many ways to enter it but only one way to exit it - as a changed man, I feel about Shantaram. Even though this is an extremely well written novell and not claims to be a book of any spiritual subject, the impact is the same. At least for me. It touched my heart and I will be forever thankful to Gregory David Roberts for writing Shantaram. I think the reason I love this book is because of the love in it. The author describes the city, the characters and the story itself with such love and beauty that they find their way into the readers heart immediatley.
