Shivanasamudra Waterfalls – Sea Of Shiva

There are many beautiful places near Bangalore that are tranquil, unique, and all natural. One such wonderful place is the Shivanasamudra Waterfalls, literally meaning Shiva's Sea, it is situated at Mandaya district, at distance of around 120 kms from Bangalore & 85 kms from Mysore.Originally called Heggur, also known as Shivanasamudra ( sea of Shiva) because of the volume of water.

Shivanasamudra waterfalls are known for the first hydroelectric power station of Asia that was built in 1902. This station was commissioned by the Diwan of Mysore, Sir K. Seshadri Iyer. This is one of the oldest power generating stations in India. The electricity produced here was initially used in the Kolar Gold Fields. Thus, Kolar Gold Fields became the first town in Asia to get hydro electricity. The Waterfalls divides into Barachukki Falls and Gaganchukki Falls, which fall from an elevation of 200 feet and merge into the Cauvery River. These waterfalls are considered to be the second largest in the country and are considered amongst the top 100 waterfalls across the world.
