SHREK 2
The long awaited arrival of the sequel to the super hit movie, SHREK. Now unlike other sequel movies, this one stands out different. It ends up being as good as, if not better, than the original.
Cast and Voices:
Shrek Mark Myers
Fiona Cameroon Diaz
Donkey Eddie Murphy
Puss in Boots Antonio Banderas
King Harold John Cleese
Queen Lillian Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins remember…….)
Fairy Godmother Jennifer Saunders
Prince Charming Rupert Everett
The story:
A brief flashback shows us the little princess Fiona, and how and why she was kept captive at a tower, guarded by a dragon. She was supposed to be rescued by Prince Charming, who would kiss her and break the curse that bound her, and they would live happily ever after.
So, Prince Charming, would chance a perilous journey through blistering snow, scorching desert, traveling for many days and night, risking life and limb to reach the dragon’s castle and rescue the princess.
So far so good, just like any Grimm fairytale.
But for a single problem. By the time prince Charming reaches the castle, the not so beautiful princess Fiona is out on her Honeymoon with Shrek, her so called prince charming. In short, He is late.
Cut to the present, Fiona and Shrek are summoned by the King and Queen of FAR FAR AWAY, also Fiona’s parents.
Here is the classic Father-in-law v/s Son-in-law hatred story that culminates.
Then the whole story becomes darker, with the realization of a secret understanding between The King and Fairy Godmother, to get Fiona married off to Prince Charming (that’s his name, not a characteristic), who also turns out to be the Fairy Godmother’s son.
Desperate the King summons, the bravest Ogre killer alive, the Legendary, PUSS in BOOTS. Who takes a liking for the Ogre and befriends him and together they go to see the Fairy godmother and manage to steal a magic potion that turns Shrek into a handsome guy and Donkey into a White Stallion.
The starts the adventure of rescuing Fiona from the clutches of the Godmother, who is trying to convince Fiona that Prince Charming is the new Shrek.
We have the Pinocchio, The 3 Blind Mice, the 3 Little Pigs, and the Ginger Bread Man, all staging a rescue mission to save Shrek, a la Mission Impossible style.
Then again, we have the true message of the meaning of love. It is all about falling in love with the person and not the outer beauty. Beauty, as they say is in the eyes of the beholder. That is why Fiona and Shrek decide not to continue in their new beautiful self, but rather return to Ogre looks, coz that’s what they really are.
And as for the end, if you want to listen to Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas sing Livin La Vida Loca, this is the right place. It is really cool to hear both of them singing a Ricky Martin song and grooving to the music.
Voices, Mark Myers and Cameroon Diaz are very good as Shrek and Fiona respectively, Eddie Murphy plays the part of the annoying Donkey to the hilt. It was really good to hear Julie Andrews again. The others were good.
But one of the best was Antonio Banderas as PUSS in BOOTS. He carries the character just like he played the Mask of Zorro, with a heavy Latin accent. Only exception, instead of the ‘Z’, there is a ‘P’ as a signoff mark.
A movie worth a watch, not only for the children, but also for the adults coz it talks about love, the most important essential for continual and an everlasting relationship.

P.S. You don’t love someone because they are beautiful,
They seem beautiful to you, because you love them……
