Sify's Spiffy

I switched from Pacenet Broadband to Sify Broadband about 3 weeks ago. The main reason I changed was Pacenet was a 950 a month and Sify was 650 bucks, so I decided to give the cheaper one a try. I’d say I’m satisfied with the speeds I get with Sify over Pacenet. It is faster than say VSNL dial up connection, at certain times of the day it is even faster. Downloads are faster than my previous ISP but there’s still lots of room for improvement there.

In any case, it feels nice to be able to have pages with large graphics load quickly and you could get used to this very easily. It hasn’t been a complete smooth ride with Sify though, very soon after installation, the connection was down.

One major grouse with Sify I have is this, they have a real stupid login mechanism, you’re supposed to visit a URL provided by them and then put in the login name and password, many a times this page will not show up and it can be very very frustrating. Why a large company like Sify cannot get a simple software created where you could double click on it and login, God and Sify only know! Anyways, so when this URL was not showing up, I called up support to find out what was wrong, support centre is based in Chennai so even if you’re calling from Mumbai you will speak with someone from Chennai.

I have to say, the support staff seemed very polite, curteous and genuinely interested in trying to solve your problem....does this mean they are actually capable of solving your problem??? Not really! I got the usual assurances of, I will find out what happened and call you back...then the call never comes, many of the support people told me to check the cable modem and stuff out of desperation!

I got mighty pissed at the support people because of their inability to help me and blatant lies and requested the number of customer service in Bombay itself, apparently sify are not woo well staffed in Bombay and all the shots are called from Chennai itself.

So I got in touch with head of customer services in Sify at Chennai and narrated my problem and was assured of quick resolution of the problem and it was resolved. To Sify’s credit, the staff in Chennai were prompt and the higher up’s called many time in Bombay to help out and check up if problems have been resolved. Good follow up and for that I am grateful. Overall I’d rate Sify Broadband a 7/10.
