I was originally introduced to the book by a close friend, and after I read it, I felt compelled to see the movie. I was impressed. Anthony Hopkins portrayed Hannibal beautifully, and I really liked Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling. She was able to mesh Clarices innocence and wide-eyed childlike desire to learn with her intelligence in a way that made the character very believable. (I was disappointed that she didnt come back to portray Clarice in the sequel, Hannibal.) The plot is mapped out well, and the writing is done so that the story can be followed even if you havent read the book. Keep in mind, however, that neither the book nor the movie are for the faint of heart. Bizarre and disgusting moments are interspersed in this story, but if you have a strong stomach and a dark sense of humor, I highly recommend the book and movie, as well as the next book and movie, Hannibal. You will easily stay glued to the screen (or book), and it is has a high rewatchability rating.
