Summertime can be a big problem for eczema sufferers. The hot, moist weather conditions can cause bad flareups of this skin condition. Here are some helpful tips to get you through the season.
First, dont be afraid to take more than one shower or bath a day. Dermatologists have long abandoned this old fable. What you need to do is get the sweat and bacteria off the skin and moisturize the skin. Just be sure that the water is tepid, not hot. Moisturize the body with a light, fragrance free lotion such as Cetaphil Lotion. It was developed years ago for dermatologists to moisturize skin afficted with eczema and related skin conditions and makes the affected areas feel comfortable.
Second, keep the folds of the skin dry and comfortable. I use Baby Cornstarch to keep these areas cool and chafe free. These areas are where you will find the most chance of flareups during the summer.
Try to stay out of the humidity. Sweating causes the most aggravation to eczema. If it get really bad, see a dermatologist for help. They can get it calmed down if it totally gets out of control but I found after 40 years of suffering with eczema, that these tips work wonders!
