Its not often that u get an actress in Indian cinema who is INTELLEGENT and SHARP.Smita was one such actress.She, together with Naseer, Shabana, Om, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani and others were the pioneers of art house cinema in the late 70’s and early 80’s, a concept which was very new in Indian cinema at that time.She got to work with brilliant directors like Shyam Benegal, Mahesh Bhatt, Ketan Mehta and delivered some performances which are DREAM ROLE for actresses of any generation.Be it the other woman in Arth, strong Rajasthani woman in Mirch Masala or film actress in Bhumika, village woman in Manthan her powerpacked performances mesmerised the viewers across the nation.She also did some commercial films most remembered being Namak Halal and Shakti(both with Mr.Bachchan).But it is the arthouse films for which she is remembered the most.Fans like me miss her even today in fact more so today when we have strong roles for actresses(Corporate, Black, Fanaa, Kabhie alvida...)She will always be remembered as one of the most powerful actresses in the history of indian cinema.
