Mercury Films P. Ltd.s Snip! tells the story of three principal characters—a British-Asian hairdresser, an overweight hitman and an unsuspecting egg delivery man, whose life undergoes a sudden change after the death of an aging film star, who dies in his bathroom one morning. The three characters find themselves trapped in a chaotic turn of events for the next three days. How they emerge unscathed from all the confusion, forms the crux of the film.
The film is meant to be a comedy, but it falls flat on the face soon after the first few reels. In fact, it takes off quite impressively with the introduction of the three main characters, giving you an feeling that it is a hatke film. However, it starts dragging soon after, with the comedy proving to be more of a farce.
A lot of questions also remain unanswered, like why does Tara go and spend a night with Johny, though he is a Casanova. Even the climax of the film is abrupt. The biggest drawback of the film is its script. Despite the fact that the film is technically quite impressive, it fails to sustain interest due to the loose screenplay. The music (by Ashutosh Pathak and Dhruv Ghanekar) seems uninspired. The editing is loose. Ravi K. Chandras cinematography is, like always, a high point.
Performance-wise, Sophiya Haque is likeable. Sohrab Ardeshir is good. Saurabh Shukla is first-rate and he does full justice to his character. Makrand Deshpande is competent as well. Nikhil Chinappa, though, fails to impress.
On the whole, Snip! does not have the substance to appeal to the common man. Its poor face value will also go against it.
