I went to see this movie as I was impressed with its trailors.Does the movie live up to the promise shown in the trailors? Yes.
This movie marks the debut of Abhay Deol. He has been paired with Ayasha Takia who has movies like Tarzan and a Filmfare award for the best debut to her credit.
The movie has been aptly titled Socha Na Tha. Everythig that Abhay Deol ne Socha Na Tha happens in the movie. He has a girlfriend called Karen in the movie. He has not told his family about her. Upon being pressurised by his parents, he becomes ready to see a girl .He has to meet Aditi( Ayesha Takia).
Abhay Deol is not interested in marriage. When he meets her, she discloses that she too does not want to marry him. Hence, they decide that Abhay would tell his family that he is not interested in marrying her. Upon rejecting the rishta, a rivalry begins between the two families. Now, will love develop between Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia ? Though you dont need to be Sherlock Holmes to answer this question, the treatment given to the movie is genuinely funny and lively.
The first half of the movie is thoroughly enjoyable and fantastic. Compared to the first half, the second half is not so good. But, mind you this is only vis -a -vis the first half . In absolute terms, the second half is also good. The psyche of todays ciry youth has been wonderfully portrayed. The best part of the movie is that it seldom drags- it is only 15 reels. When you are comfortably seated expecting the climax, you realize that the movie is over.
Abhay Deol deserves the award for the best debut .He could not have asked for a better debut. His performance in comic scenes is absolutely fantastic. This does not mean that there is no scope for improvement in his acting. His perfomance in emotional and serious scenes remains far from convincing. Ayesha Takia plays the role of a 20 something girl quite well .She looks sweet and innocent in the movie. The performance of the supporting cast which includes Sureh Oberoi, Sandhya Mridul, Abay Deols friend is also good.
The songs are fresh and lively. They look good in the movie .But, I would not recommend its music album. The movie moves along with the songs.Abhi Abhi is the best .The title song is not far behind. Another song which I liked was the second last one, the lyrics of which, though simple, are fabulous. The movie also ends with a song. The flipside of this movie is that the camerawork in the start is too jerky.
To conclude, Socha Na Tha is a fresh, lively and funny movie. Its total paisa vasool.
