INTRODUCTION
I just cannot believe that there is no review on this fantastic movie so far. So I will write one right now. Just as Abbas-Mustan’s earlier films Khiladi and Baazigar, this one too was one right movie. I just saw this movie for the sixth time on the last Sunday in Star Gold and that made me think about writing about this one.
The movie really did impress me right from the beginning. We will know from the start that this one is going to be interesting for sure. I first watched this movie when it was released and it seemed to be in the television channels every time I switch it on without any type of discrimination. The movie seems to have got some sort of addiction to me.....oops, actually, I didnt mean what I just said.
THE MOVIE
The film has some melodious songs. Soldier soldier, Mere dil jigar se guzree hai, Mehfil mein bar bar, Mere khwabon mein jo aaye, Hum to dil chahen tumhara, Tera rang balle balle, all are just fantastic and it is just great to hear the theme of this movie. No song from any other movie created this much of an effect for me before this one which made me buy the audio cassette as soon as it was released.
The sad thing is that now the CD or DVD of this movie is not available in any of the shops here and I will have to wait for it to be shown in the television for watching it again. The movie seems so well planned from the beginning to the end. Each and every part of the movie seems to be marvellous.
THE PLOT
Vijay Malhotra (Pankaj Dheer) is a courageous, honest and a patriotic army army officer in charge of safely transporting millitary weapons from and to millitary camps. We are able to see three corrupt army officers, Virender (Dalip Tahil), Pratap (Suresh Oberoi), Jaswant (Salim Ghouse), with the help of another person called DK (he is a suspense character) murder Vijay Malhotra so they can get him out of their way and continue smuggling weapons.
Virender along with Pratap flies to Australia and smuggle weapons there to become two of the most powerful and feared dons while Jaswant and DK stay in India and we comes to know that Jaswant murdered. But right from the beginning, we come across a mysterious handsome character Vicky (Bobby Deol).
We are with Vicky for most of the time - he is our hero. In Australia, Vicky comes across the pretty - Preity (Preity Zinta) who is Pratap’s daughter, and they both fall in love as expected by the viewers. Thats Bollywood - hero and heroine has to fall in love.
Then he seems to have come with a pact with Pratap. We can see him fighting with the brother and son at the same time. What is his intention? Who is he? What is in his mind? Where will the love story of Vicky and Preity end? What will be the end of these gangs? If you watch Bollywood movies usually, you may be able to figure out the answers for these questions, but watching the movie is something entirely different.
PERFORMANCE
Bobby Deol excells in the action and the romantic comedy scenes. He got some vague expressions at times for sure, especially during the sentimental times. His dialogues have got more and more solid. He was in need of a hit movie and we got one here. He seems to have got more chances as an action hero more than in any other role.
Preity Zintas first movie as the heroine got herself some good image as the film did click well in the box office as well as the songs too worked well. She looks good at romantic scenes with that cute smile on her face and seems to be suited for comedy in the most appropriate manner. Well, she looked much different from the current Preity, well time has passed too fast, I think.
Dilip Tahil and Suresh Oberoi were good as the dons and Ashish Vidyarthi did his small role really well. Johny Lever did bring the much needed humour into the movie as expected as a person wandering here and there searching for his twin brother who was lost. He comes at all occasions when we are in need of some humour. We do want some humour in thrillers so that we can relieve the high pressure.
CONCLUSION
The music and the suspense makes this movie unavoidable and I believe that most of you may have seen it by now. Those who havent cant dare to miss this movie because it is one of those rare action movies that are worth watching again and again even if I find some parts of the movie too much stretched and unnecessary to waste time.
I dont know why they cannot make movies like this again these days. The call some movies suspense thrillers, but they are not so - they even called Tum a muder mystery, how could that be so? Most of the parts of Soldier was shot in Australia and New Zealand which gives us a chance to view some sceneries while going on with the story line.....
