This is a review I’ve been planning to write for a long time. Finally I’ve gotten around to doing it.
The first time I heard Sonu Nigam was when my grandmother gave me a cassette containing his religious album Maiyaji Ka Darshan II. The bhajans were Durgaa Maa songs and I listened to the cassette every night for a whole two months. Then I heard his film songs and instantly I knew who was going to be my favourite singer for the rest of my life no matter who came up. If I admired the ay he sang those bhajans with so much devotion and passion I admired the way he sang his film songs, with feelings the songs deserved. That was about three or four years ago. I’ve been a diehard and loyal Sonu Nigam fan since then and every song he came up with I loved. I think the first Sonu Nigam film song I heard was Mera Yaar Dildaar (Jaanwar). I loved that song a whole lot I still do as a matter of fact. Sonu-ji has not only captured my heart but millions of people around the world, adoring fans who appreciate not only his talent but who he is as a person.
Sonu Nigam was born on July 31st 1973 in Faridabad near Delhi. He has two sisters, one of whom is Nikita Nigam another rising star and promising talent of the Nigam family. Incidentally Sonu-ji has changed his surname from Nigam to Niigaam, so I don’t know why I’m still typing Nigam. Astrologers have told him the new spelling will bring him good luck.
Sonu-ji is the sweetest, most caring person ever and he is very friendly as well. He has the most wonderfully charming smile which can melt the harshest of peoples and which makes fans like me melt when I see it. (I’ve got probably 20 pics of him where in all he is smiling charmingly). And if his smile doesn’t melt you his voice would. I’m coming home in the car with my parents and brother, and Sonu-ji is singing on the radio and I am practically and literally melting like butter in the hot sun. That’s the power of his voice. His first performance on stage was at three years old when he sang a particularly difficult song of Mohammed Rafi’s Kya Hua Tera Vaada (Hum Kisise Kum Nahi) and amazed all people who were there. Sonu-ji has always wanted to achieve what his father couldn’t a name in the singing industry. Which he has done.
Sonu-ji shot to fame when he sang Accha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar Ka for the film Bewafa Sanam and after that he has graced songs like Suraj Hua Maddham (K3G), Saathiya (Saathiya) and Sandese Aate Hain (Boder) with his golden voice. In addition to those songs, Sonu-ji other best include Satrangi Re (Dil Se), Aisa Lagta Hai and Panchi Nadiyan (Refugee). Some more recent are KHNH, Main Hoon Naa and Tumse Milke (Main Hoon Naa), Parineeta, Paheli, Chanda Ki Doli and most recently Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.
He has won numerous awards for his songs; the last award was the Filmfare Award for Best Male Singer for Kal Ho Naa Ho, in 2004. I was pissed when he didn’t win in 2005 for Tumse Milke (Main Hoon Naa) and even more so this year when he lost again to Himesh Reshammiya’s Ashiq Banaya Apne.
Sonu-ji is not the party-type; he prefers to stay at home to spend time with his family. Sweet, right? Having one younger sister is not easy much more for having two. Believe me I’m the youngest and I give my brothers hell. Imagine what the poor guy probably has to go through with two. Anyways, I’m just kidding. I know for a fact that Sonu-ji and his sisters love each other dearly. Big brother is an idol to Nikita Nigam, who wants to become a singer like her dear older brother.
Having achieved all this, Sonu-ji is now thinking or retiring from singing. Yes he is. Heart-broken, dear fans? So am I. he made the announcement on the eve of his birthday last week. Sonu-ji says that all he wanted was to make a name for himself in the singing industry and he has done so. Now he is planning to retire so he could pursue the hobbies his hectic schedule ahs prevented him from doing. He says now he is singing a hundred songs, he will go down to around thirty, and slowly diminish to nil. Sob*. Sonu-ji how could you? Your fans will miss you! But I am comforted by the thought that even if he diminishes to nil, there would always be some songs that are in dire need of his magical voice.
Having written all this and I am trying to keep my review as short as possible and that is the shortest I can do. Yeah you guys may be wondering what my essays must be like. Well, I never stay within the given word limit; I always go over by at least ten. But my essays always achieve high marks and they are just as enjoyable and interesting as my reviews. In fact a review for me is nothing but an essay on my thoughts and feelings about the product. Ok now I really am going to stop typing. Please do tell me what you thought of my review.
