Sony X85J: Impressive Until Panel Issues Surfaced

I bought the 55" Sony X85J in May 2022, thinking it was the best non-OLED option under 90K. The Google TV interface ran smoothly, the HDR/Dolby Vision was impressive, and I felt confident Sony would provide the quality my family could enjoy.

Things went well for 2 years and 4 months, but recently, the TV developed panel issues—vertical flickering and a double image right after turning it on, lasting anywhere from a few seconds to hours. It only had a one-year warranty, so I’d purchased an extended warranty through CPP Asset Secure, which turned out to be insurance by Acko. When I reported the issue, a technician came out, confirmed it was a panel problem, and mentioned he’d seen similar issues with Sony TVs lately, more than with any other brand. This was a shock, especially since he warned that Sony’s replacement panels often last only about six months. He’s waiting on Acko’s approval to fix it and might send it to Sony if the repair is too complex.

Honestly, this experience has really made me question Sony’s quality control. I’ve had a similar issue with another Sony TV in the past, and it’s unsettling to see it happen again. Next time, I might just go with a more affordable brand like Vu or Hisense. If something goes wrong, at least the hit won’t be as big.
