Decent package but some bothersome issues

Lot of people hv written abt C510- so wont repeat too much

1)camera is good for daylight shooting, though the pictures deceptively appear well-saturated on phone screen, but when transferred to a computer, saturation levels are lower than desired - dint expect it from a Cyber-Shot, though acceptable in a normal phone camera.

2)Dim light photos are really really poor. the flash is an eyewash. I took a C510 and took some portraits in normal indoor room light - but the images became darker - coz the flash produces a burst which the lens is supposed to capture and then adjust exposure/white-balance assuming that flash would hv lighted the subject for some X degrees.

However, in 95% of the snaps, the flash and lens capture timings were out of sync and hence the camera doesn’t capture the image when it is lighted up by the flash, and on top of it, it adjusts the exposure downwards - making the images very very dark. I thought that it is something abnormal with my phone piece, so I went back to the dealer the next day and got the instrument changed - but the new instrument had the same issue and this time it couldn’t be changed!. Hence if a phone camera cant take pics in normal room light - which is where it is most likely to be used - whats the point!

3)The camera does not zoom if not in VGA mode - which is very irritating. often you cannot get a decent focus due to this and the subject becomes too small and you are forced to capture too much unnecessary stuff in the image!

4)Unlike some previous SE phones (e.g W810i which I used happily for 3 yrs), C510 doesn’t have a night mode at all - instead uses the ill-functioning flash! hence you can just forget that you will get decent room snaps even if assuming that you were to manually turn off the flash also!

5) I hv also observed a serious flaw in the Sony ericsson PC Suite. the latest version has some issue as a result of which I just cant use it. it gets hanged while connecting to the phone. I hv tried it on more than one PC as well as more than one SE model. same issue!

6)those desiring a good PC utility for SE phones - try MyPhoneExplorer (google it - don’t remember the site). wonder why SE cant hv something on those lines itself !

7)one good thing abt this (and in fact all SE phones) phone is that you can use it to receive unsupported file types thru Bluetooth transfer or MMS - unlike say a Nokia where if the file type is not supported then you cant even receive and save the file like a mass storage device.

8)memory is decent and installing java apps doesn’t eat up the memory in hidden files.

9)I find SE interface to be breeze - very intuitive, handy and object oriented!

10)Another wonderful feature is the integration of web-feeds into the browser as well as home screen. If you happen to visit any website which has the feature of rss feeds, the icon will start flashing and you can add the feeds to your browser. Further, the feeds can be turned on on your homescreen where they come in the form of a feed ticker for ready access. extremely intuitive and useful feature

11) the earpiece volume is a big disappointment - too low even at max volume

12) another issue (common to all sony) is that they hv a single dock. hence if your phone battery is down, you can either charge it, or listen to music - not both!

13)The piece I bought had the M2 memory card - much expensive compared to MicroSD - though I must also admit that some of the latest SE phones with MicroSD cards hv slower file writing and transfer rate- esp critical in shooting photos.

Hope this helps.
