Ok let me see…you are planning to buy a new phone and being
the smart informed consumer you are, you want to do your research before you go
headlong in buying a 13-14k phone? Let me guess.. Nokia user? People told you
that SE was the way to be…you want to be double sure before you take a plunge?
Or perhaps you have already bought this phone and now you want to hear some
good things about this phone (in the language of psychology this is called
“reducing your cognitive dissonance)
Being a self proclaimed reviewer that I am let me atleast tell you my profile and usage. I am a middle level executive in a telecom firm.
Receive and make a lot of calls during the day, send 35-40 messages in a day
8-10 very long ones (report, instructions etc.), hear the music during the long
lonely commute to home, plug the phone to my laptop to use it as a modem. You
get the general picture..right?
I had a nokia 6670 and I was happy but then the phone
started throwing tantrums ( is the nokia shelf life of just 2 years?) so I
moved to this one. Ok enough of background lets come to the point.
At the beginning let me tell you that I am not commenting
anything about the music or the camera. The 2 mp camera with auto focus is very decent and the
music is beyond any description ( adjectives like awesome, great, mindboggling
have been badly exploited lately)
And anyways these things have been time and again discussed,
debated and rediscussed in all the other reviews. Lets talk about the other
finer details that these manufacturers don’t print on their catalogues but they
matter a lot to users like us. I am succumbing to the attraction of comparing a
nokia- smartphone to a SE 810 so here goes…
Why SE 810 i
Its bloody fast- if you have been using a nokia phone and
that too one of their so- called smartphones please be careful, there is a
danger that your eyeballs may pop out.Menu scrolling, application opening ....these
guys have set new paradigms
Very very good display- Crisp colors, animated wallpapers,
screensavers. Cool, groovy stuff. Good change from the bland ‘strictly-
business’ phones of Nokia. Makes you hip without being too loud. Nice.
Subtle touch of innovations- As soon as you type the message
and hit the continue key there is a list of people whom you have messaged
recently. Just choose among one of these. I don’t have to go into my contacts
time and again. Very nice thought and how immensely practical!
USB Recharge- This one is a lifesaver. I no longer carry my charger to office. I just have to plug in my phone in the USB port and it gets charged. This feature comes in quite handy even during my numerous tours. Mindblowing!
Fantastic headphones- Apart from the sound quality the sensitiveness of the microphone is quite a revelation. So like Sony! External speakers (came bundled with my phone)- Very good accessory to have. The speakers do exactly what they are supposed to do. Undistorted clear and sufficiently
loud sound
Charging- Ok this is my personal favorite...I don’t have to
carry my charger at work I just connect it to my USB and it keeps getting
charged while I synchronise my phone to outlook.
On second thoughts…
Nokia is like a boring girlfriend. You might like to hang
around with some happening people but you miss it because well…you just get so
used to it. If you are a user like me then this is what you are gonna sorely
miss-
Unlike a Nokia pc suite you cannot simply plug the SE phone to
your laptop and then start sending those 1000 characters sms. SE just doesn’t
have this extremely useful utility
You can’t sort your sms into the folders of your choice. So
now I have to sift through the maze of jokes, useless forwards to go to that 1
elusive sms.
It can just store some 200 odd sms. The sent messages keep
on piling up unless you don’t delete them and there is no provision to store
the messages on the memory card. What a waste!!!
I am not too gung-ho about the battery backup. Drains away
after 2 hours of Talktime. Yes I do listen to a lot of music but what the heck.
Final Verdict:
SE 810 is a fun phone, With this phone you don’t need to
carry an ipod with you but its not a phone for serious business users like me
who need to use the phone like an sms machine cum organizer cum battery
powerhouse.
