UPDATE 1

-

A new variant if the z550i has been released in the market, named z558i. It is a business phone. Looks are super, and there is a new feature of Handwriting Recognition Technology. If you are thinking of buying any cell-phone, have a good look at this one. The market price at the moment os Rs 7800/-

The Review of Sony Ericsson z550i:

I researched the mobile market for around three months. I looked into three mobile brands- Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola. Eventually, I narrowed down and shortlisted three cell-phones from each cell-phone manufacturer.

The SE z550i from sony ericsson,

Nokia 5300 from Nokia

and MOTO RAZR from motorola.

I finally selected the SE Z550i Black based on the following facts:

1) Z550i has all the features I was looking for. I don’t care much for music, so I didn’t go for walkman edition. Nokia 5300 also has all the features, but the price difference is very large. MOTO RAZR contests with SE Z550i in this round, and Nokia gets eliminated.

2) Nokia 5300 is available only in Black and White. Black is in very short supply, and now, white also is in short supply. I don’t like white mobiles in my hand, with red stripes running through the side. Also, I have two friends who own the 5300 white, and both have advised me against it because the spring mechanism gives serious problems after an year. So, I dropped the 5300.

3) MOTO RAZR is sleek, thin, good colour, and good looks. But I was put off by it’s durability. It is also very wide, and the digital M logo, which appears in monotone when you open the set is very uninspiring. But, I was specially discouraged with the giant design of the mobile set.If you are looking at MOTO RAZR2, then that is completely different.(MOTO RAZR2 is far superior than z550i, and a tad costly too.)

4) This leaves the Sony Ericsson. I picked the z550i because it gives the feeling of compactness, and good technology. The 1.3 megapixel camera was a good advantage. Note that the Nokia 5300 offers the identical features of this set, but is costly when compared to this. I wanted bluetooth, and expandable memory and both are there. The Z550i cellphone comes under’style’ segment of the SE brand, and is the most aggressively advertised. Better still, when people see this one in your hand, a second look is guaranteed. It is durable, becaust the fromt and the rear casing are in metal and it is liked by all the people.

I will also inform you about some flaws of z550i which I discovered after I purchased the mobile.

1) An odd grating sound comes out of the speaker occasionally, when you attempt to play any music, from the media player. It is some kind of software problem, and is not common to all the models.

2) The battery is poor. If you do no activity, it lasts from 4-5 days. If you do normal activity, then battery lasts 3-4 days. If you do intensive work(like playing games or music or video), battery lasts for 1-3 days.

3) The music played along with Video is not up to the mark.

4) The’task’ feature does a poor task in keeping the appointments, and reminding. this is because the alert tone of’task’ feature is pathetic, and cannot be changed.

5) Camera functions good. But the quality drops when shot in average or low light.
