The PlayStation 2 console was priced at £299 but was slashed to under £270 and now it costs under £199. With the largest software library ever introduced for a home entertainment product, the PlayStation 2 system promises to change the landscape of the living room with its multi-use platform. The new system carries the capacity to play older PSone games, plus audio CDs and DVDs.
Additionally, the new system is backward-compatible, meaning that its capable of playing the 100’s of older titles available for the older PlayStation console.
Accessories include an analog Dual Shock 2 companion controller (£18), a 8MB memory card (£25), and a multi-tap system (£25), allowing up to four players on the PlayStation 2 console at the same time. wireless DVD remotes are also available from a third-party manufacturers.
While all of that sounds great, what about the graphics? Operating at 66 million polygons per second (compared to the original PlayStations meager 1.5 million), the PlayStation 2 should deliver cutting edge, graphics. The PlayStation 2 also boasts a 128-bit Emotion Engine and 48 channels of audio (both twice that of the original) and the aforementioned DVD-playing capability. However, don’t purchase the system expecting to get a top-grade DVD player — the hardware is built specifically for playing PlayStation games, not for delivering deluxe movie viewing.
But, fear not. If you’re desperate for a PlayStation fix and don’t want to shell out for the £199 price tag, there is a solution. Sony has also recently unveiled an all-new PS One system. Technologically identical to the older original PlayStation unit, the new PS One is one-third the size of its predecessor.
And now Sony has just unveiled their harddrive, and online capabilities into Japan, hopefully this will be a success and should come here very soon.
So forget about the other consoles comming on to the market next year this is going to be the leader of all home consoles.
