The best notebook on the market in late 2006

I would sooner share my toothbrush than my PC, so I naturally maintain egregiously exacting expectations from what my laptop. Having owned Dell clunkers of all shapes and sizes, I now know that itreally matters what machine I use.

First off, one of the 2 reviewers of this notebook seems to have missed the point. He laments a Sony Vaio he owned "2 years ago from Dubai". News flash: Vaios have come a very long way, are now shoulder-to-shoulder with Fujitsu as the best notebooks on this side of the pond (especially if you get the babies produced in Japan, not in Thailand or Malaysia), and are probably the only computers in the Windows camp that can give Macs a run for their money in terms of looks.

The list of what I love and have grown accustomed to is long.

  1. Excellent, excellent, flat keyboard. It even looks cool. Bye bye IBM (Lenovo) hegemony.

  2. Extremely light. 1.6 Kgs is nothing. Of course, don’t buy too much into this lightness thing, as all computers weigh a ton when you include the cable and adapter.

  3. Screen dims or brightens up according to lighting around. This is incredible.

  4. Fingerprint access (yes, many keyboard have this, but it’s just very conveniently implemented here).

  5. 1GB memory rocks. So does the CoreDuo. This is a super fast machine. I can use Photoshop and play games at the same time.

  6. Excellent battery life, even with the wireless on. Boon on flights.

  7. Excellent bright screen, 13.3 inches on the one I have, not too big, not too small.

  8. Has a webcam built in. And it works out of the box, without painful driver installs.

Only gripes: the pre-installed bundled software is useless and can be discarded without much fuss, and I could really do with 3-4 USB slots for this price. But these are minor and quickly forgotten.

In short, Sony has finally got it right with this batch of Vaios. I was nearly looking for creative ways to get rid of my ugly Dell! https://neednewpc.com/?at452b0839b654ams7
