Good effort but ...

Hearing the very name of this obnoxious sounding movie, I am sure no one would be even remotely tempted to listen to the music, leave alone buying a CD.

But I have other reasons to listen to the music. One of sheer curiosity. For the music director of this movie (Domnique Xavier) is also my keyboard and Guitar guru. So I set out to evaluate his debut venture. But this is not his first recording by any means. he has been an assistant MD to deva for 15 years and has worked with a variety of MD from MSV to Ilayaraja. He is an expert base guitarist and a equally good keyboard player and has very strong western training.

The musical background is all fine but the film that he has got a break is almost a 3rd rated soft porn kind of junk going by the semi nude swarnamalya photos. So I really doubted what he can put into this arid desert.

Song : Kolam poda

Singer : Pushpavanam Kuppusamy

Comment : This is a typical gana/folk type song. One can clearly see that the MD has been with Deva for years. But there is a conscious effort to offer something musical even in this dry number. One has to appreciate the lyricist. Given all the constraints of this type of song, he has tried to convey the antics of men who hang around with the only intention of exploiting women. The best thing I could find about this number is, it is not irritating to hear.

Song : Pirichika

Singer : Ranjith, Saindhavi

Comment : I have seen this little girl in music competitions by Jaya TV and have been amazed about her musical abilities. She is going to be one real hot property in the likes of Harini. With such a sweet and innocent voice, it is her voice that instantly catches your attention. Though nothing special about this song, it is still pleasant for a 3rd rated soft porn like song. Laded with heavy rhythm, the MD desperately tries to infuse music into this desert of a movie. I can’t help feeling sorry for MD’s in such films. They are insults to a person’s musical ability.

Song : Machan nee

Singer : Domini, Saindhavi, sini

Comment : This heavily Shami kappor like song is a real deviation from the repeated music of today. Though it has a heavy western classical adaptation of a symphony as its start, this song is very refreshing. With its triplets rhythm, it is really racy. The second interlude with a old style tabla beat is also a nice variation. Full marks to the little girl for her expressive singing. Very refreshing number.

Song : Nan Oorchava

Singer : Suchitra

Comment : Has a wonderful rhythm to start off but deviates to a totally different beat. This is a typical item number. But there is again a conscious effort to provide something musical. The first interlude with a brief magudi type interlude is nice. Less said about the lyrics better. Again the best thing said about this song is that it is not irritating to hear. I have consciously not mentioned about the female singer because I really pity a singer in these songs as no one can gain anything out of such songs.

Song Aparna Aparna

Singer Ranjith, Rajalukshmi

Comment At last the MD gets to do something musical and he scores. A very pleasant number with a good melody and some interesting strings arrangement with a lot of violins and veena. This is one real jewel in this poor movie. Ranjith sounds almost like tippu and has done a very nice job. But it is Rajalukshmi who steals the show. After her kokku para para song, here she is to prove that she is good singer. The melody portions and the instrumentation is handled very well. But the sound recording could have been a little better for in many places it overshadows the words.

In all I would honestly not say tat this is an album worth buying but certainly Domnique has a real potential to score good music, given a chance.
