A 1965 , 20th Century Fox release ‘The Sound Of Music’is a Julia Andrews & Christopher Plummer Starrer. A winner of 5 Academy Oscars including Best Picture & Actress awards, this movie is an inspiration to many a movies in Bollywood as well as abroad, most of which have been successful. The best example being Parichay which was a Jeetendra starter. The nos like Sare ke Sare Gama Ko Le kar & musafir hoon yaaron are the most famous ones.
The story is about a girl named Maria played by Julia, from the Abbey who is kind of an apprentice under various nuns there who is more attracted towards nature & music than her religious commitment. This is hwre the nuns sings the song “how do u solve a problem like Maria?”On noticing this the head Mother sends her away for herself to discover what she wants in life and sends her to a Naval Captain (Christopher)who is a widower to care of his children as a governess .The children are brought up by the father under strict military discipline who show their pranks once their father is away. These kids have sent many a governesses packing. But Maria by ignoring the Captain’s prescriptions for stern child-raising , with her gentle ways and singing manages to win the children’s hearts. Maria teaches them to sing with the number Do Re Mi.
They then perform a puppet show at a party hosted with by the Captain for his would be wife to take care of the children where they perform’The lonely Goathered’ & the Captain is impressed with Marias ways after which the two dance to the tune of an Austrian folk song where the two feel that they have fallen in love. Then undr the influence of the new lady Maria returns to the Abbey. She tells about her feelings to the Mother at the Abbey who encourages her to go back & get her love with the number ‘Climb every mountain’.
Here at the Captains villa the new lady is not able to win th echildren’s hearts after their dad announces their wedding. They are inconsolable without Maria. She then bows out gracefully & leaves way for Maria after which the Captain & Maria decide to marry. At this point in time the Nazis invade Austria & the Captain finds that he has been called into service by the German Army. The kids perform the song ‘ So long Farewell’ in front of the military officials & make their way to escape from there.
In this review I have missed on many good numbers like My favorite things , I have confidence, Sixteen going on seventeen etc. All in all a gr8 movie worth the rewards it got & will be appreciated even today..
