What recourse do I have if Spice Jet loses my check in baggage?
On Nov 4, 2007, my parents flew from Delhi
to Mumbai in Spice Jet flight SG117, 12.30pm. On reaching the Mumbai Airport
when they weren’t able to locate one of their check-in baggages, they reported
the matter to the ground crew. Disappointed, but not yet dejected they lodged a
complaint with Spice Jet authorities, with the hope that the airline would
recover the baggage for them. What followed was a rude shock. Since then our numerous
attempts to contact the Spice Jet customer care centre have been met with
frustration. My relatives from Delhi, family from Mumbai and I from Bangalore have
had to go through a tiresome process of keeping up with the Spice Jet
authorities to get some clue on the status of the misplaced baggage, with the airline
changing its stance in every communication. After a harrowing experience of
following up with them, the airline admits 2 days later, “with lot of regret”,
of losing our baggage. To make amends they agree to compensate us with, hold on
to your breath, a sum of Rs 3000 for the loss. Now may I ask SpiceJet that what
is the basis and purpose of this compensation? The bag itself costs more than that.
The only thing that I can recover with the peanut sum that is being offered is
probably just my phone bills because the luggage costs a hell more than that. Worse
still, any negotiation from our side on the amount has fallen on deaf ears.
They no longer attend to our calls and complete ignorance of our complaints has
been their way out of the mess which they created. Their response has been cold
and absolutely insensitive. I wonder if this is just another way of making
money for these low cost airlines. My family feels cheated and looted by the
airline.
What answer does SpiceJet have to give for their callousness?
