It was just a few years back that ’’Spiderman’’ emerged on the boxoffice charts and shattered all records quite unexpectedly! The thrill of the masked hero gliding through the city skyscrapers clearly got in to people.
It has been sort of a tradition in the movie industry that sequels made to popular movies do not fare as well at the box office as the original hit!See for example Harry Potter, the first movie had a novel charm to it as no one had before seen a movie made on the magical world of Harry Potter. The sequels were a success as well mind you , but not as big as the first one. Point is that it is difficult to ensure that a sequel to a previous blockbuster comes out to be a hit as well and in ’’Spiderman 2’’ we not only have a hit, but the movie sets a benchmark as how sequels should be....
The story continues from where it left off. In fact , clips from the first movie are shown during the start of the movie. One would have expected to see a lot more action in this one and just that since it is supposed to be an action movie without much emphasis on story. This is where the director comes in with the surprise, the movie is full of depth, story, emotions, purpose, struggle and ofcourse some eye-popping action sequences.
Here, the director has tried to show people how hard it is to become a hero and live up to the expectations of your followers. It can be applied to our everyday lives since it’s not necessary to be Spiderman to be a hero. The character of Spiderman in the sequel has been potrayed in such an effective way that the viewer sees himself in that role instead of Peter Parker. Peter Parker is split between the roles of saving the city from criminals and living his own life and reaching his own goals as Peter Parker and not as Spiderman.
His love, Mary Jane Watson(MJ) is back in this sequel as well and the relationship between Peter Parker and her is followed in more depth over here. At one stage, the act of juggling his life between the two roles , compromising with his studies, job and other duties becomes too much for him and you see Peter saying: ’’I’m Spiderman....No more’’. What makes him come back in to the shoes of Spiderman is all about why heroes exist.Meanwhile you also see Peter’s friend who wants to kill Spiderman because he thinks Spiderman killed his father .Now to the bad guy in this movie...
The Green Goblin in the first movie is replaced by Doc Ock as the baddie in this movie. But his character is not supposed to be bad because Doc Ock is someone who is involved in a revolutionary experiment for the betterment of mankind. It’s only that his experiment screws up and he ends up being the bad guy. The fight sequences between him and Spidey are top notch and much better than the first movie. For people who haven’t seen this movie yet: Watch out for the train scene between Spiderman and Doc Ock;This is one of the best action sequences in any Hollywood movie! As far as the climax of the movie is concerned, you must be thinking Doc Ock dies and that’s it, , , nopes. Doc Ock gets killed but not by Spidey and that’s not the full climax, , there’s something else as well. That remains for you to go check out for yourself.
Finally...it’s a great movie and as a writer for a leading newspaper quoted:’’It’s a Superhero movie for those who don’t go to Superhero movies’’. You will see great performances from Toby Maguire and the lot.It’s also has a lot more comedy than the previous one.If you are looking for a movie that repays you the full amount of your ticket in terms of enjoyment, make your way to Spiderman 2 and discover the hero in yourself.....
