Webslinger's Rocking Debut

Atlast , after watching Superman and Batman display their histrionics on-screen for the last several years we finally get to see our very own friendly neighborhood Spider-Man make his first celluloid appearance worldwide in this movie which broke many box office records. The movie marks entry of this universally acclaimed webbed wonder into the big screen in a “larger than life fashion.” So how is it? Man it rocks!! Everything about the movie is simply superb , be it the cast , story or direction. Tobey Maguire has been aptly cast as teenage high school student Peter Parker/Spider-Man who’s world changes after being bitten by a genetically modified spider, and exudes the right amount of softness , nerdiness and timidity which befits the role. Kirsten Dunst also offers the perfect choice to play spidey’s red-haired girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. The rest of the cast is also great. Frankly speaking , I am myself an ardent spidey fan and have grown up watching his animated movies , so I was very impatient to see the movie the moment I came to know about the birth of this project. The first thought to cross anyone’s mind about a movie of this genre would be “another superhero” movie. But unlike the other movies made in the past , this one throws light upon the humane side of a superhero , making it different from the rest in terms of treatment and substance . Moreover , if we observe keenly we find that the USP of Spider-Man , unlike the other superheroes is in its ability to reach an average human being. The events which have been shown to take place in Peter’s life are quite common and if we look back we will find that at some point of time in our lives we have also experienced them, either wholly or partially. For eg. unlike Superman , Spider-Man acquired his superpowers as a result of an accident , which is a common phenomena. Similarly , Spider-Man is not born as the sole heir of Wayne Enterprises , unlike Batman , and instead belongs to an average middle class family, which is also the case with most of us. Further, all of us during our school days have gone through times of embarrassment where we were scoffed at , laughed at , or bullied by our peers , bringing this feeling of being a “loser”. This is what exactly Peter has been shown to experience before his dramatic transformation. Finally, the movie shows Peter living with his aunt and uncle on account of being orphaned at a very young age when he loses his both parents in an accident. This also is a common and an unfortunate phenomena which has taken place with some of us. I would conclude by saying that the movie is worth seeing atleast once because it tries to move out of this age old mentality of only a gory battle between a superhero and a supervillain and tries to explore the human being inside a superhero , making the audience feel at times that “he is one of us.”
